As much as being ruthless and getting a better left back appeals, there are better places to focus  our spending when he is available and a sure thing. I also think there is something to be said for being loyal to players who have done very well for you, keeps dressing rooms and fans on side on same page.

I'd like Targett myself, but if Howe thinks he's not good enough, then wow, we must be setting the bar very high.

So high that the budget must be very large and exciting times are ahead.

I know what you mean. Like, sure, Lodi may be better than Targett. But say he is £25m, is he really £10m quids worth better than him?

What was the agreed fee for Targett again, £13m?

It's amazing value for someone who is pretty much at least 7/10 every game and already part of the squad.

They must really rate Lodi to potentially go out and spend a lot more on him and hope he can settle in and defend well in this league and a back 4.

I wonder if Howe wants the flexibility to switch to a 3atb at times? Or maybe similar to how Liverpool setup with narrower wide forwards and really attacking fullbacks?

Do people think we will have finalised plans and targets for the window, or it will still be an ongoing process ?

I reckon it will be like Jan. Where we will have priority positions, with a good few names on the list for each position that we work our way through.

I’d prefer Targett to Lodi tbh. Not convinced that Lodi could do a decent enough job defensively in a back 4.

Honestly it’s a bold/ possibly foolish move not going for Targett at the prices being mentioned imo.

If you watch Man City or Liverpool, one of the reasons they are such an effective passing team is because their full backs are almost better out wide than most teams actual wingers. If we want to play football like that we will need to upgrade. Basically we want a left sided version of Trippier. Targett's a fantastic defender but he's not going to give you what Trippier does.

Targett would be stupid to sign to compete with someone else.

I think it's part of the reason him signing hasn't been as straightforward as anticipated.

I think it's part of the conversation Howe will want to have with him regarding him staying on, which is that Howe would look to sign another fullback like Lodi that is more attack minded to rotate with him, with Targett being more of a defensive specialist when we face teams that will challenge us more.

If Targett is fine with that then he'll likely be signed with Lodi I think, and Lewis will then be moved on.

Pretty exciting to have 2 really attack minded fullbacks, and he’s very quick which is something our defence is crying out for.

He’s quick but very erratic and defensively quite suspect; also despite his superior speed, I don’t think he’s got enough about him physically to excel in the premier league.

The guy has never managed more than 2 assists a season. Comparing him to Man City and Liverpool fullbacks is overrating Lodi massively.

Largely not true of City. Their fullbacks spend a lot of time in CM positions. And they have the wide forwards super wide a lot of the team to stretch play.

Liverpool are different. The fullbacks are forward and wide. We seem to be going the Liverpool route.

Not comparing anyone here but that reminds me of Yedlin. Speed is not everything if you are out of position regulary. Lodi would be a gamble, he may be good but Targett is tested and we know what be brings. Price is low. Buy.

I haven't seen him tbf, just assuming he is good because Howe seems to want him. Of course there maybe nothing in it and all this is just paper talk.
