World Cup Final: Argentina 3-3 France (4-2 pens) - Argentina are world champions

Finally starting to come down from the anxiety that France might win that unjustly. I hope Messi continues to play for Argentina as he’s still the best playmaker in the world and as a fan I want to get every last drop out of him before he retires but for his sake I can imagine that retirement would feel like bliss when you’re at the peak of achievements

Has it been confirmed that Messi is retiring from the national team after today?

It's 18 months until the next Copa - so he could probably still contribute. And he's two goals away from 100 for Argentina. But you do kinda feel he'd be better ending now at the highest point.

I’d possibly look to retire on a high.

I hope he’s done. Argentinas team without him is as good as Paraguay basically.

Dunno, in Fernandez and MacCallister they've got a couple of quality CMs and if Scaloni stays put you figure they'll show up and be a well organised team that's hard to beat.

Contending will come down to whether Alvarez can turn into a top class CF.

Doubt they'll be favourites any time soon but could see them being dark horses.

Absolutely brilliant game to end a brilliant tournament. Also delighted to see Messi lift it before he eases his way out of things.

History made and I was lucky enough to watch the whole thing. This is the ultimate in the sport, it does not get any better than what we saw today. Peak football.

All things aside, never has a side deserved more by such a slim margin.

France were shit, Mbappe bagging a hattrick in that was akin to Klose being the all time scorer, baffling.

Italy beating England in 2012 on penalties after dominating 99% of the game

Being told 1986 final was as good if not even better than this. Can anyone confirm?

Much better quality, i mean France were pathetic for most of that game. West Germany weren't. No dodgy pens. Counter attacking goals to match Di Maria's and a clean win (not pens). Not as dramatic maybe but better, unless drama is what you're looking for.

Thought the ref was genuinely a huge part of why the game was as good as it was. Anything borderline he just told them to get on with it. Football is supposed to be a physical game and it felt like it today.

So many people seem to think going down when you are contacted should entitle you to a free kick and it just makes for such stop start shitty games so often.

Plenty of refs would have blown for a foul on Messi for that second France goal and it would have cost us a wonderful goal from Mbappe.

Gets lost a bit considering what happened after he went off and what almost felt like a different game - but Di Maria was absolutely superb. After Messi he's the player who also deserves his medal.

Couldn't agree more with this. Such an underrated player.

I can't remember a better world cup final in my time, Goals galore, two ATG's at their peak both scoring for fun, and such a great atmospere considering the hosts had barely any history of football.

I imagine the 1970 final where Brazil scored 4 was maybe better.

Remember when folk used to actually have debates about whether Messi or Ronaldo was the greatest player of all time, and some people used to say the latter. Absolutely wild.

Ronaldo is top 10 based on power of his achievements and longevity. Suggesting he is the best ever was always nuts.

Messi is now ahead of Maradona and Pele after today for me.
