  1. 1. How likely are we to finish top four this season? 0 = nee chance, 5 = can’t call it, 10 = nailed on marra

My idea goes sort of the other way, and will never happen, and is ruined by the fact man city win the league every year anyway, but i think champions league should be just for the champions really. Maaaybe allow cup winning teams in to. Knock out only. Brutal tournament of just the best of the best teams. Then Europa league takes the next 4 slots in table, and conferance league next 3 or something so plenty of european footy for teams of all sorts, but champions league is very exclusive.

Never going to happen, and yes rather rubbish in current state where the number of teams that will realistically win the title is very narrow

Why not have play off play off places where the teams in 9th to 12th play off to play the team finishing 7th or 8th who've played off against each other ?

No ? You're right James, it's a fucking stupid idea.

For next season.  It's based on how well English clubs do in the competition, and Liverpool will probably do better than Man Utd.

In all but one of last 5 seasons (and in that one it was insanely close), EPL would get 5 spots based on the new system.

How is excluding Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Dortmund, but letting in BK Häcken and Celtic making it best of the best?

Do they normally do the CL draw during the day? Might have to book that date off work.

Show started 5pm this year mate, draw started just before half 5.

No idea who he is but this reeks of someone trying to come up with a solution to a problem that previously didn't exist, solely because he's annoyed his team's been pushed out of the top 4 and might not be back there any time soon....

Didn't win did they? It's a tough game.

But you're massively watering down the tournament.  It'll basically be Man City, PSG, Bayern, and Barcelona/Real steamrollering a load of teams from smaller leagues.

I remember the minute applause we did for Atsu, their fans ended up singing YNWA during the 60 seconds. Felt strange it was supposed to be our moment to remember our ex player, but their fans made it about them.

It’s always about them.

Well, it’s not, but this playoffs idea is definitely not what is needed. We have it over here in NL and for me it defeats the purpose of the league table.

Tbf I think a lot of that tweet comes from what has been a really decent set of Play-off ties over the last few days that have created a lot of drama in the Championship and League 1, he's probably just caught in that wave of excitement from that, especially given he is a fan of a football league club.

UEFA (and the TV companies) want as many games, and as many big games, as possible.

Lots of Milan vs Barca, Real vs Man City, Bayern vs PSG = lots of viewers, lots of money

Celtic vs Tallin, Cluj vs Dinamo Minsk = less viewers, less money

Yup, would be so shite.

If the PL gets a 5th place in CL thenatbe his playoff idea might work. But really it's a long season, you finish where you deserve to be.

The PL will get a fifth place in 2024/2025 season apparently. But the whole of the CL format changes to a huge "Super League" format too

Makes no difference, Premier League will only have 4 clubs this season maximum

Only way we would have gotten a 5th is if the CL winners finished outside the top 4

Or if Man Utd or Arsenal finished outside top 4 and won Europa

English teams don't tend to win Europa. In the last 25 years, Chelsea have won it twice, Liverpool won it maybe 20+ years ago under Houllier, and Mourinho won it with Man Utd. That's it. 4 Champions in 25 years.

Sevilla have won it 6 times in that time alone. Real have won the CL that many times in the time period if not more.

The main point of the playoffs in the Champ, L1, L2 etc is to ensure there aren't a load of meaningless games in the last third of the season between mid table clubs that are too far off the top two but not in a relegation battle, so have nothing to aim for.

That isn't an issue in the PL because 5th - 7th are still battling for Europa League/Conference League. Why add three more games to an already packed schedule when players are gassed enough as it is at this stage of the season? There's still plenty of big games in the usual round of fixtures, especially given there are at least 6, now 7 'big clubs' who are constantly playing each other plus the competitiveness of the rest of the top ten.
