It does amaze me how you can literally become a millionaire by guessing correctly on an outcome but it's so so much harder than that.

'They've taken so much money off poor and vulnerable people that they're the UK's biggest tax payer' isn't the winning argument you think it is.

 

And giving a small portion back that you've taken isn't 'doing good for the community'.

 

Society would be far better off without gambling. And I say that as someone who has benefited enormously from gambling myself.

You’ve hoyed some of your own slant in there and put it in quotation marks tbf. 
 

Gambling is as old as we are best to regulate and tax imho.

 

Consumerism, banking, financial services, the food and beverage industry are all as culpable as betting operations at harming the vulnerable in society. I’d argue gambling is an easy target.
 

I agree the amount of advertising and it’s prominence across football needs reviewed but problem

gambling rates remain  fairly static. I’d argue the penetration of the internet and social media into every minute of our waking lives via smart phones is probably cooking up unforeseen problems bigger than just gambling for our kids.

First bit, yeah fair enough I was just struggling to properly quote on my phone. I had directly quoted you so the original text was there in my post to see, but then used "s incorrectly to indicate a quote when I should probably have used 's as it was paraphrasing. I've edited my original post to better reflect this.

 

As to your second point, social media is free. Sure kids being on social media all the time annoys old people who don't use or understand it, and you could argue it has negative mental health connotations if over-used to extreme, but nobody has ever lost their house through using Tik Tok too much.

To be honest, gambling is just the same as smoking and drinking and any form of addiction, including porn. Some don't do it all, some do it occasionally and are not bothered, some do it as a hobby, some do it as a job, some people get obsessed, some get addicted, some lives are ruined, some commit suicide over it. 

 

It's about education and restriction. Not prohibition. Prohibition doesn't work.  There is nothing remotely good for yourself and your body drinking more than one glass of wine. But we all do it - socially it's fun. Same with gambling, it can be fun.

'Provides jobs and tax revenues' is the go-to excuse for most  immoral enterprises.

 

For what it's worth, I don't think it should be illegal either. I know It does significant damage to society, so I take no part in it now.
