NUFC Transfer Rumours

I think the opposite to be honest. I'm happy with the business we have done but I think if you'd said Elanga, Wissa, Thiaw and Ramsdale at the start of the window most people would have scoffed and seen them as squad fillers rather than signings to boost the quality of the team. When we were chasing Pedro and Ekitike people were talking about them as Wilson replacements and still touting names like Gallagher and Guehi for the midfield and centre back. Trafford at various points over the last year seemed like a shoo-in.

After missing out on Trafford, I think Ramsdale is a smart addition on loan. He seems decent with his feet, probably not as commanding as Pope, but more agile than Dubravka and therefore an upgrade for a minimal outlay. Wissa is a nimble and hardworking forward and a better backup striker than I expected us to sign, but not cheap given his age and only recently prolific in front of goal. Elanga is a good Premier League winger but still looks pretty raw. I like the fact that we've doubled down on pace and pressing and directness down the flanks, but like many people I was initially warm to the idea of a more creative wide player. And I like Thiaw as a project, he seems to have all the tools to be a really good centre back, but that's one position where I thought we might splash the cash and look for an established leader or a top talent given Burn and Schar's age and Botman's fitness issues.

I think we will sign Wissa and Thiaw which will bring our spending to around £130 million with us still needing a midfielder. And I'm optimistic about all of those signings in isolation, but as a Champions League side I think it's decent rather than anything special.

I’m in the same camp think the window has been underwhelming and it’s still debatable whether any signing has raised the standard of the starting 11. I’ve come around to the Elanga signing slowly, but am i convinced he’s a massive upgrade on Murphy, not really as things stand.

This is kinda where I am with some caveats.

1, still time in the window maybe we can pull some rabbits out of hat.

2, Elanga should be better than Murphy however is his output going to be better? That's the real question for me.

We've said for the last 2 or 3 seasons the starting XI is improved if we improve depth. We can't play the "Starting XI" every game, we've seen what happens as there's such a drop off. It's not ideal, we'd have preferred to do both but any improvement is better than going backwards.

Trouble is that it seemed clear at the beginning of the window that we were shopping at the top end of the market - Premiership proven, or if not, the best of Europe. An attempt to break the Sky 6, not to compete with, say, West Ham.

Now we've been knocked back and gazumped so many times in three weeks, we're back to West Ham-style signings and hoping Eddie can turn these into world-beaters.

I admire and respect our ambition. I just feel sad for Eddie that circumstances haven't permitted us to get him the top-notch players he could've used for a proper campaign at the very top. And he would be blamed if we don't do well this season. Expectations are now very high.

It’s been clear that the 2 positions that needed strengthening from starting 11 were a right forward and CB.

We’ve spent about 90 million on both positions this summer. I’m all in on Thiaw I think he could become top drawer and is one of these defenders that can be a rash for opposing forwards.

This window will be judged on whether Elanga and Thiaw are a success, they have to ultimately raise the level of that first 11 for me, whether that be from next Saturday, or 4 months down the line.

I don’t think expectations are that high now to be honest. What do you guys expect?

Pre-window I wanted a replacement for Wilson (Wissa ideal), a starting RW (Elanga probably not who I would have gone for but I think he'll do well) and starting CB (don't know whether Thiaw will be that just yet). It was obvious the club were after a keeper who is more comfortable with the ball so hopefully Ramsdale is that.

I wanted a 3rd/4th choice CM before Longstaff went so I think we need at least one now. Would love someone like Gallagher at the £40m range, not a backup as such but someone who we can have in the midfield without a substantial drop in quality.

Obviously the Isak situation complicates things, going into the last part of the window needing to seal Wissa and bring in a midfielder is one thing but if we also need to bring in an elite level (or at least elite potential) striker, that's a tough ask.

Ive already got Lewis Hall and Harrison Ashby pegged as CMs ahead of relying on Willock.

Once Thiaw and Wissa are done, we need to go full steam on a CM. Even if its a loan with an option, that would do.

The sooner we accept that we can’t count on Willock as a Newcastle player the better. Just get rid for 0 if we have to.

Not only is he finished, but we'd struggle to get a bag of beans for him

Gallagher wouldn't be a drop in quality say from Joe, but someone who can offer something different. Can't see it happening though. Probably Rudoni.

a top class midfielder in addition to Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton? To come as a rotation option? It’s not gonna happen. We’re trying to upgrade on Longstaff.

How do the other big clubs do it then? Im not being sarcastic but if we are limited to the first 11 being good and the rest being just ok then we aren't getting anywhere.

I think having 4 quality CMs for 3 positions seems perfectly workable to me. Im sure Villa have a selection of midfielders who they rotate, and its seemed to work for them.

Ive no issue going for a younger player who can improve FWIW but i really liked the idea of McGinn.

4 quality CMs for 3 positions is a minimum for a 'strong' team imo. You have to play a minimum of 38+8=46 games in the league/European competition. If the minutes are spread evenly across the 4 CMs then each of them will need to start 34.5 games. That's almost the same as starting every game in a PL season.
