Said it before but we are a team that presses and Gallagher is arguably the best pressing CM/AM in the league.

This is why Howe wants him

Gallagher doesn’t evolve our midfield but what he does is that he solidifies our strength in midfield on the whole. Over a season he will allow us to be strong in the midfield area consistently. When rotation is needed to rest players and keep them fresh, or when there’s injuries/suspensions we will be able to maintain a higher level throughout the season.

I would say that he doesn’t necessarily raise the ceiling, but the floor or however it goes. This is very much needed with all the extra games. If we fix most of our weaknesses in the team and squad in this summer window then after that we can more easily add more players that takes us to the next level. That’s when we don’t need to sign as many in one go.  Now it’s more about balance, that is both strengthening as well as getting better depth. Unfortunately we can’t just sign players that evolves us.

If he's a direct replacement for Longstaff - deputising when Tonali is unavailable - he imporves our midfield options massively.

Have to laugh when we were linked with him from Chelsea everyone was totally against it.  'Cos he's been to AM everyones now on the hype train :D

As someone who wasn't keen last summer id say things have changed as the contribution from Longstaff and Willock weren't sufficient and obviously this summer we wouldn't be funding our rivals.

Not to mention we are clearly doubling down on plan A with the elanga signing so why not?

Plan B is do Plan A better.

So we could actually sub one of Bruno, Tonali or Joe after 60 mins and not lose the pressing intensity, if required.

Gallagher comes into the same bracket as Ekitike. You have to consider we might go for it simply because Howe has a long standing interest in the player. Although you would have thought we'd have gone for it when he was trying to leave Chelsea.

I think Gallagher would be a great signing but realistically I don’t think he will want to join us. First, AM will also be playing in CL next season. He is currently on 150k a wk and we wouldn’t be offering much of a pay rise if any. And he as a multimillionaire is from London and currently playing in Madrid. Chances are that Newcastle won’t be an attractive enough city for him.

I’m perfectly fine with us not necessarily signing players that are next level quality. Hopefully one or two of the signings can take us to the next level with the right coaching and a bit of luck depending on how they develop in our team. It’s all about solidifying our position in the league first and foremost. By that I mean competing on all fronts while still being strong enough to finish in back to back CL places. Once we cement our position in the top 4/5 and are in the CL consistently that’s when we can go for more quality than quantity. There will obviously always be ups and downs. We are still in the very early part of our “rebuild” since the takeover. We have already achieved a lot in a very short time. We just need to get the recruitment right. As we all know it’s not just about spending big to succeed.

He might just want to come back to the UK like Trippier did though. If the rest of the big six can’t find space for him we might well be a front runner.

If the rumours were right, he was aware of our interest but had no intention to join us. I think we need to stick to our model which is signing young promising but relatively unproven players on low wages (e.g. Tino and Hall) and hope they develop into top players.

If that's true then these rumours that we are interested are probably bollocks anyway.

That is possible i guess. Hopefully he will see that he’ll be a good fit for us and us for him

I've given up on my fixation for a left footed technical playmaking wizard with god-like vision, touch and freekick ability, so aye.. LET'S FUCKING KILL THEM WITH RUNNING!!

Doubt he'd want to come though. He's on a long, expensive contract. He'd view it as step backwards.

When did Gallagher become such a desirable signing on here, like? Last time he was linked there was meh's flying all over the gaff

last time he was linked quite a lot of us wanted him and thought he would suit our style. But there was no indication he wanted to join us. Tbf, if you read the Elanga thread at the start of the window lots of people were like meh before transfer speculations intensified and that by pretty much all accounts he’s interested in the move. Fans’ opinions change quickly since the dawn of time.

I'm not sure about that mind, the general consensus was that he runs around a lot doing fuck all. Now he's replacing big Joe ffs

Tbf since then he’s had a season at Atleti, doing decent, not great but decent.

I haven’t seen enough of them to pass judgement really, but from what I’ve read this afternoon it’s seems he started pretty well but wasn’t helped by the change in formation.

I think post-takeover, my opinion and criteria on what would be a good, desirable and exciting signing have changed quite a lot over time. Eddie has cultivated a strong identity with certain fundamental qualities, and then pursued and bought players carefully to fulfil roles in that style to make it function. Most importantly, it's a style and an identity the fans almost unanimously enjoy and feel represented by and now trust due to the success it's brought. So now when linked with players like Gallagher and Elanga, where previously I may have found it uninspiring, I'm now excited by how those players could make our way of playing even more effective.

Never really rated Gallagher. Would be too expensive to be a back up and don't think he improves our first 11.

But beggars can't be choosers and if Eddie wanted him and he didn't cost the earth then whatevs.
