It'll be interesting to see how we do without Tino. To be honest, I've never been completely convinced about him. He's a good athlete, but I think he needs to work on his first touch and his passing.

It looks like we'll have Hall and Burn competing at left back, and much though I like Big Dan, I'd really like to young Lewis come through.

Very surprising considering he has been probably the best wing back in the Prem Right or Left in the last two years. His end product can definitely improve!

As much as we will miss Tino it would be good for him to get a break, wasn't he playing for England U21 in the summer. We get through this and welcome him back and it would be great for a squad boost.

I love pretty much every player (except that one guy) that started that cup final.

Massive soft spots for all of them.

I'm not really one to be overly biased when talking about players. But the lad that silenced Salah into being subbed (he was subbed right? might as well have been) in the LC final, you're not convinced by him? That's crazy.

At worst he's solid defensively whenever he plays.

His only real weakness in his game is how indecisive he can be in the attacking third. He also occasionally switches off. But rarely gets punished when he does. Due to how quick and strong he is.

He is better at left back. He’s elite at that position and I’m not sure there is a better one v one defender in the league on that side.

I'd agree with the first part. On the second bit, I'd much prefer to see him on the right. I think his left foot is quite weak.

I tried to word my initial post carefully, because I didn't want to say he was a bad player, or wasn't worth his place. He's strong and athletic, and as a result is able to recover from his mistakes, as you and others have said.

What I like to see in a young player is an eagerness to be on the ball, and to make things happen. I haven't yet had that feeling with Tino, but I have with Lewis Hall. I hope that Tino will continue to develop his confidence, technique on the ball and decision-making, but there's still work to be done. I just think that some of the praise he's getting now is premature.

I'm not saying he is strong on his left foot, although he will clip crosses in well enough on his left peg.  But he looks a better defender and attacker when on the left.

He seems really comfortable drifting in side and receiving passes in little pockets of space and making underlapping runs.  Or just driving forward on the ball infield and sort of shunning the touchline at times  He gets forward with much more success and confidence than on the right.  When he is trying to get down the line or get in behind on the overlap from RB, he rarely looks as effective or like he is causing the other team problems.

I can't say I've studied it enough or I'm clued up enough to know why he looks so much more comfortable on the ball on the left.  But it is very noticeable IMO.

As for the defending side, I think it's fairly obvious.  Most teams play with inside forwards or inverted wingers these days.  He's usually defending on his stronger foot.  But he is also fast, agile and strong enough to stop wingers when they try to go on the outside.

I think you're doing him a massive disservice in your assessment.  I know recency bias always plays a part and we can get a bit hyperbolic as fans and I know we've hardly been spoilt for choice with great defensive fullbacks over the years.  But he's by far the best defender at right or left back in my time watching (born in 89 FWIW).  I'd say Enrique was the best before that.  But he was far more one dimensional than Tino.

I think the main difference is that on the left is he has an inverted winger, which gives him space outside. On the right he's tended to be behind Murphy who also wants to stay wide so they tread on each others' toes a bit.

Same reason we got the best out of Trippier when he was paired with Miggy; Miggy cutting in and looking to make off the ball runs, plus his general neat and tidyness on the ball opened things up for Trips to be successful.

I think Tino also likes to angle infield a bit on the left to stand up a defender and then as he pushes off with his right to accelerate  he uses that movement to take the ball with him at the same time. He likes that move and he's perhaps more comfortable using his right to do it.

Anyway, Tino's a great 1v1 defender and athlete. His main issue for me is that he's a dilly dallier on the ball. Usually wants a few touches. I'd like it if he could pass quicker and more decisively.

This bit we can agree on, but I'm a bit more concerned about his technical limitations on the ball. Full backs often play an important part in an attack, because they're the ones who are most likely to receive the ball in time and space, and facing forward.

I think as well we expect different things from our LB and RB now having both Tino and Hall

I think we want our LB on the ball more, and we also protect the LB with a midfielder, usually Joelinton.

Whereas at RB, there's no / less midfield cover and Tino's pace / 1v1 ability is used to cover the RCB

Our set up makes both look great at LB imo.
