Manchester City 1-0 Newcastle United (19/08/23)

Had hoped we could give City a fight today, but only to realize that they are several classes better in everything. Even with injuries and the match against Sevilla/travel in the legs. Terrible 45 min from Joelinton this.

Interesting half, expected possession play, we need to do more with our half chances and great finish aside they've not really created much either in spite of their positional dominance. We can still get a result, Barnes and Wilson could be key subs.

Joelinton especially looking uncharacteristically timid. We've had some good runs off the ball but need to improve the final ball, the whole team seems a bit timid really.

Hopefully if we can keep it tight someone like Barnes could come on towards the end and nick it.

Not trying to be hyperbolic in my criticism, but I think Newcastle might watch that half back and feel a bit embarrassed.

No shortage of effort, especially out of possession, Man City are by far away the better side, and that's all fine, but the amount of times Newcastle players have shat their pants with unforced misplaced passes or heavy first touches is not the standard the team will hold themselves to.

Still think this Newcastle team are class, but a lot of that wasn't Man City brilliance. Just Newcastle way too intimidated, not daring to take on anyone.

These are still the treble winners and it's as well as we could've done given we haven't played well. Really slow in possession all round, not moving the ball quick enough, haven't been able to get Isak involved at all. Joelinton's been poor.

All I've got.

Nothing to worry about in the grand scheme of things, but we need some sort of plan for Foden. He shouldn't constantly be finding space like he is.

Thought they've been their usual boring, efficient selves. We could be better, Joelinton inparticular not at his usual imperious self.

Not too bad tbf - still in it.  These are bloody good - but we knew that already.  They’re not having an off day, so to be in at HT at 1-0 is hardly the end of the world.

Yes, a few of our players aren’t at their level.  But that’s why they’ve just won the treble, and we’re hoping for top four again.  They’re a level above - getting to this level will take time.  We can still nick something here though.

Really disappointing to concede that goal when Trippier threw the ball straight to their olayer and then Botman passed an easy pass out of play. Felt like we were panicking and then bang we concede

Tactically Pep has got that spot on today to nullify us. Makes Miggy and Gordon high press energy a bit useless if you unbalance and counter us to the point we stop pressing.

We will have to change things. Barnes direct pace and link up play might be handy. Joelinton seems off key, so maybe Longstaff for him to protect defence better. Even Sandro and Bruno look confused as to how to pass forward or impose themselves.
