I don’t think it’s a secret that Howe likes to have a lot of control over things. I also think it was made pretty clear by him at the time that the Mitchell appointment wasn’t welcome news. It would be very weird for us to pursue a defender for that much money (and who we’re unlikely to be able to attract after this window IMO) and not have a back up in mind in case the deal didn’t come off. If that’s what happens then we can only assume the direction is being given by the manager.

To be entirely fair to Hope, I don’t think Howe being obstinate as fuck and insisting on Guehi is far from the truth. He obviously had his nose put out by Mitchell’s arrival/Staveley’s exit. You can definitely see him trying to flex his muscles.

If PSR is a big concern you’re not waving the fat end of £70m under Crystal Palace’s nose IMO. I think the fact of the matter is they’ve spotted an opportunity to get the player they wanted above everything else, believed they could get a deal done and simply ran out of road. The next 24 hours will be interesting. You’d hope there’s some alternative names and they’ll move quite quickly to try and get at least a body in.

The eternal optimist in me says that the fact the news hasn’t leaked via Parish’s mouthpiece in the Mail means it’s coming from our side. Could be an attempt to force Palace’s hand. The realist in me says this is a mess.
