What's Woody's injury record been like this season? I've not noticed him much, has his form been poor?

Good video of Chelsea players taking the piss out of his lack of English.

He calls Geremi his second daddy in that video.  He's signing for sure.

Well, certainly hope his footballing skills don't take after his father.

Geremi was alright until he started following Allardyce instructions, took a few weeks and lo he was visibly a poorer player.

From The Times January 9, 2008

Newcastle keen to test Arsene Wenger’s resolution with move for Lassana Diarra Scott Rutherford

Sam Allardyce is following Mike Ashley’s orders and getting on with his job as Newcastle United manager by setting his sights on a move for Lassana Diarra, the Arsenal midfield player.

The 53-year-old has been given assurances over his future by Ashley, the Newcastle owner, and Chris Mort, the chairman, in recent weeks despite a difficult run on the pitch and has wasted little time in implementing his January rebuilding plans.

Having had a bid for Wes Brown, the Manchester United defender, rejected on Friday - Allardyce and Mort will discuss the way forward on that issue - the club have registered their interest in the 22-year-old Frenchman.

That is yet to result in a bid, but it is understood an inquiry has been made and that Newcastle are ready to test Arsène Wenger's resolve to hang on to a player he signed only during the final few hours of the summer transfer window. However, Portsmouth are reportedly also on the trail of a man who has found his chances limited at the Emirates Stadium.

Newcastle are not expected to spend heavily this month and Allardyce, a man who built his reputation at Bolton Wanderers on being able to get the best out of players who had perhaps fallen by the wayside, admits he is now shopping in a different market. He made nine signings during the summer, investing heavily in the likes of Joey Barton, Alan Smith, José Enrique, David Rozehnal, Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye, as well as landing Mark Viduka, Caçapa and Gérémi as free transfers, with mixed results to date.

However, there appear to be no question marks over the quality of Brown and Diarra, although it remains to be seen whether he can prise them from the grasp of their managers.

The Frenchman, a former Le Havre colleague of Charles N’Zogbia, the Newcastle midfield player, has started only eight games for Arsenal, two of them against Newcastle, a 2-0 Carling Cup win for the London side in September and a 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw at St James’ Park last month.

Allardyce has lost four members of his squad - Beye, Faye, Gérémi and Obafemi Martins – to the African Cup of Nations, although Martins, the Nigeria striker, could yet return briefly to face Manchester United on Saturday. For that reason, Allardyce is unwilling to let anyone leave before he has added to what he has left, with Middlesbrough and Norwich City said to be monitoring Shola Ameobi’s position. Asked if there was anything happening on the transfer front, he said: “Not at the moment – certainly not out, but hopefully people coming in before we let anyone go out.”

Allardyce could get another player back soon with Stephen Carr, the right back, who was expected to play for the reserves against Sunderland last night. The 31-year-old damaged a hamstring in the match away to Blackburn Rovers on December 1 only two games into his comeback from an earlier injury and has missed the past eight senior fixtures. However, Carr will have a chance to stake his claim once again with Beye, who has filled in during his absence, potentially away until the middle of next month.

Magpies want Diarra

SAM ALLARDYCE wants Newcastle United to conclude a deal for Arsenal's unsettled Lassana Diarra before giving Emre the go-ahead to continue his career away from St James' Park.

Sources in Turkey claim Bayern Munich have already struck a deal with Newcastle for the creative midfielder, although the 27-year-old's representatives have failed to agree terms.

Monaco are keen on luring Emre to France, while Galatasaray also remain hopeful their former hero will return to Istanbul.

And Allardyce has accepted that the former Inter Milan man is not in his plans for the direction he wants Newcastle to head, but knows he does not have the strength in depth to sell at this stage.

It is more than likely Newcastle will accept less than the £3.8m Graeme Souness paid in the summer of 2005, although they will be looking to recoup as much of that fee as possible.

Both Bayern and Monaco would match the valuation and the decision would lie purely with Emre, given how he can claim a bigger contract at either of those clubs than he would at his boyhood heroes, Galatasaray.

But bearing in mind the dearth of Newcastle's midfield options, Allardyce will not allow Emre to move until a ready-made replacement is lined up.

With Joey Barton's future uncertain in the aftermath of his off-the-field problems, the Newcastle boss is already short of his £5.8m summer midfield recruit.

Now Geremi has headed off to the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon and Nicky Butt has a two-match ban having picked up ten bookings.

Diarra is a ready made replacement for Emre?.. in which alternate reality?

Emre is no doubt more technically gifted than Diarra, but he simply never got going here.. and in this sense, any half-decent midfielder can replace him

edit: except barton, geremi and especially smith

The same one where Smith is a ready made replacement for Dyer...  :shifty:

Anyway, not really similiar players at all but Diarra would give us more and is clearly more of an Allardyce player than Emre, who he clearly just doesn't fancy.

I rate Emre, but Diarra will be a much more effective player for us than Emre ever has been IMO.

Diarra would be an excellent signing for us imio. He could do with someone creative to play alongside him, but is streets ahead of Butt/Geremi/Smith in midfield. He's probably being seen as Barton's replacement more than anything.

In the sense that Diarra can stick his head down and run straight into 3 or 4 opposing players and lose the ball.

Promising, nothing more.

yeah could mean anything, namely that he's off somewhere else, but my optimistic side is saying that hopefully our interest was registered first and the fact that he's not in the squad tonight could be quite telling

Watching that interview he said Geremi was like a second Dad to him, maybe that could sway it.

Depends, maybe his first dad was a complete wanker.
