We "only" had to beat Pompey, Boro and Fulham at home and we'd be safe, as if somehow winning three games in a month would be a piece of piss for a team that had won something like 1 in 13. Oh the Keegan / Kinnear / Shearer season? That's etched in my memory. Boro at home. The away fans having a right laugh, I'm at the gallowgate end full of nerves wondering why they're all having so much fun. "Because they don't give a **** lad, they do this every year", in the words of the sage sat next to me. 3-1 to us, I went home convinced we're staying up. Then Fulham, and the sick feeling then that we were all but down. Hoping for anything, a deflected fluke, a sending off, anything. But deep down you know it. In saying all that, even though it felt the world had ended, that next season under Hughton was one of my favourites. So, that's the ride, isn't it? Got a ton of young players that could come in - Ashley Phillips is nominated for YoungPlayer of the Year in the Championship and has captained Stoke at times this season. Lankshear, Devine and Donley have all done well in the Championship. Vuskovic has been amazing for Hamburg and Mikey Moore has done well for Rangers but I’d expect them both to stay on loan another year. Couple of other kids coming through. The problem is all the players with long-term injuries. We’d want to offload a few and the contract situation with relegation is unclear. We probably won’t take Palhinha and Kolo Muani. I’d expect Romero, Bentancur, Bissouma, Richarlison, Davies and Vicario to go. De Zerbi will make a call on a number of players but the ones who we are prepared to shift to generate money will probably include Porro, Van De Ven, Dragusin. Possibly Sarr, Simons. No idea about Gallagher. You’ve got players De Zerbi would probably like to keep like Solanke, Kudus and Udogie but who may not want to stay in the Championship. Maddison and Kulusevski have been out so long it’s impossible to say - they may want to stay to rehab and other teams may not want to take the risk. Odobert is another in this category. It’s such a young squad you could see a lot of them staying. Decent chance next season starts: [keeper] Spence Danso Phillips Souza Gray Bergvall Kudus Maddison Tel Solanke Kinsky Sarr Lankshear Devine Donley Odobert (maybe back end of the year) We’d be generating an insane amount of money in sales. Wages will interesting. Apparently (and somewhat ironically) Harry Winks is the highest paid player in the Champ on £90k. Obviously we don’t know who’s got what in terms of clauses for a wage cut in the event of relegation, but it feels implausible to be having many players on £100k+ in that league, even if it is only for one season. Bergvall is going. Kudus is going. Would get £150m or more for the 3. It’s the Bissouma’s, Richarlison’s that are hard to shift. Late 20’s, big wages, low fees these are the ones that end up staying. Like whatever we get for Livramento, we throw that on Spence. Spence is a bit of a twat isn’t he? Did the whole penitentiary thing too this season and then lost every game possible. Dr. Newcastle will see you now! Seriously though, by the time we play those two we'll likely be all but out of contention for Europe if we're not already. In that scenario, I wouldn't mind us rolling over for them and play our part in hilarity of Spurs going down. Sorry Leffe.

When we went down with Benitez we ended up loaning out a few players just to get them off the wage bill, we did get a few quid off Spurs for Sissoko though. A few will obviously but there'll be a group who'll want to get them back up at the first attempt. Everyone thinks there are some players who will stay either out of loyalty, or pride. Sometimes you even think the player who you brought into a relegation battle in January will stay. They generally don’t. The only players who stay are the ones that other Premier League clubs don’t think are good enough. The good news for Spurs if they do go down is that the transfer fees that they will receive, plus their matchday income should make so they can buy 2 full teams good enough to win the Championship. No chance Kudus, Solanke, Tel or Maddison stay in Champo. They most likely would be loaned out. Like you said though, Maddison and Kudus have been out for a long, so a small chance. But players don't waste a year of their short career in the championship (with greatly lesser pay) very willingly. I would also guess teams will be lining up for Archie Gray. SteV
Games like last night reminded me how shit it is being around relegation when it comes to other teams games. When you’re up the top you probably expect the teams you’re competing against to win the majority of their games, because that’s what teams up the top do. So when that happens, you just shrug and move on. It’s the opposite down the bottom, you’re expecting them to lose, or at least not win, most of their games. So when they do win one, especially one like last night where you’d have definitely marked down as a loss, it’s a proper gut-punch.
