triggs
Long is not a great footballer but is really fast and will run all day. He is not a poacher in the slightest bit, more of a target man with a big leap. Not very skilful either, his athleticism is his main asset. Better than Shola by a mile to be fair. Would love to see him play for us as he is from my local area originally

Cajun
Destroyed Colo for pace iirc but then that's still not that fast

Mole_Toonfan
We need a squad and we have a tight as f*** owner. A selection of Gouffran, Remy, Cisse, Ben Arfa, Long and someone really good to play through the centre doesn't look bad at all. None of them are the CF who can hold the ball up type we need though.... when you build a squad it would be a good idea to get a selection of different types to compliment each other and not just a random selection of forwards because it causes imbalance in the squad. Getting a big guy whose not a total hack with the ball at his feet would be the best considering the needs of the squad. Also the reason i was so fixated on goals in my earlier post is because we are desperate for a big man who can score goals that we can rely upon..... if we already had that guy then getting Long as a squad option would be fine and dandy. Talking about getting squad options is nice and all.... but we don't even have a first eleven yet might be a good idea to sort that out first. Sorry but that really doesn't make any difference to what I said. If Long is out of contract in the summer he would cost a pittance. We SHOULD be able to afford him and someone better. If it was a choice between a real quality centre forward or Long then the choice is easy but we need both (doesn't have to be long but we need 2 forwards). Beren
I rate Long. A sort of poor man's Bellamy. Decent comparison, although annoyingly only ever when he's facing us - other times he just looks really, really ordinary and susceptible to injury. Think about the wages man, your going to turn us into Leeds mk2. In all seriousness that is fair enough.
LRD
The Irleand striker has nine months left on his deal, plus a one-year option in the club's favour, but negotiations over an extension have stalled. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/oct/22/west-bromwich-albion-shane-long-contract Not getting always for cheap. He was going to Hull for ~£6m last summer until talks collapsed very late into the window.
Cronky
He looks a good all-round striker to me, but I'm a bit worried that he's out of favour at West Brom. I wonder what the catch is.
Stuy_O
Decent player Long imo, right menace on the pitch and gets on defenders nerves. We could do far worse whilst JFK is at the controls.
Shak
Never been that impressed with him for Ireland, but then Trapattoni never exactly set up teams that played to his attackers' strengths. Think we'd benefit far more from a Gomis type who is effective holding the ball up.

I thought it didn't go through because their deal for another year of lukaku went goodison-way and they didn't want to be left short.
alexf
I think Long would be a serious lowering of standards. I think we can find someone better, even if we're in this buy cheap era.
Big Geordie
I'd take Shane Long. Would do a job and is good in the air (something that we lack up front, since Ba left)
KaKa
I like Shane Long. Think his game would allow our other attacking players to thrive, and so it would be about much more than just the goals he scores.
The College Dropout
Getting Shane Long for a much reduced fee (due to his contract expiring in the Summer) would seem to fit the way NUFC go about transfers under this regime. Shola isn't getting a new contract so he will need replacing. It is far from guaranteed that Remy will be here next season. Shola and Remy out with Long and Gomis in for low fees would meet the current NUFC transfer 'model'. If we where to sign Long would we need Gomis? We would need someone capable of getting 20 goals but I don't think Gomis is that man. We need the option of at least one big striker who can hold the ball up. Apart from Shola we haven't got any other strikers who can do that. As I understand it, Gomis has those sort of attributes. Obviously there are no guarantees we will get Gomis. If we don't get Gomis we need a striker similar to him. In theory it shouldn't be too difficult to replace Shola with someone better. Long's not big but he's good at holding the ball up and challenging in the air. I like his all round game, link-up play, can play up top by himself.. not prolific but knows where the goal is.. However I feel Gouff has most of those attributes and could do it upfront. Would like us to sign an Ince type and try Gouff up top.

Ronaldo
I rate Long. A sort of poor man's Bellamy. Yep. More of a Gouffran with lesser work rate and better finishing. Long isn't creative like Bellamy.

Long isn't creative like Bellamy. He looks a decent enough player who will score the odd goal and if he's at the end of his contract there's probably a very good chance we'll sign him. Maybe we'll look to sell Cisse and he'll be a straight replacement.

Smal
€2.5m a year isn't that much really. Thought he'd be after more than that considering he could be on a free at the end of the season.
