Newcastle United transfer rumours in the press

Recommended Posts

It's petty but fuck selling to Liverpool. In a few years we aim to be competing with clubs of that ilk, so I don't really want to be selling them our better players (which he is, whatever you think of him) unless it's for an inflated fee which obviously gets us a more suitable player/more suitable players.

Rafa's quotes about needing a CB could potentially be the first test of the club since he took over, by that I mean actually being prepared to go out and get the player the manager wants. In the past charnley just messed about for months and ended up with no one. Rafa won't take that so it will be interesting to see how this develops.

I'm not sure if that's something Rafa would do. I think he's actually confident of getting a CB in by the middle of the week. He's now able to say that CB is a position we need to strengthen instead of saying we need to strengthen as we've brought in numorous players. If he was in happy I think hat if he was going to show this he would be more loose on the timescale and would be saying things like 'soon, and ASAP' rather than 'by middle of this week'.

It's deluded nonsense like this that gives us a bad name.

We do need to get one CB in, but it's only urgent if anything happens to Mbemba or Jamaal, we have this season to really see what the kid is made of, i'm suspecting it's stern stuff. Anyone being brought in will just be for cover so i don't see why we need to be paying mad money on average players, unless he doesn't fully trust Mbemba.

Also his comments may just be to keep the current players on their toes.

We will be bringing someone in but would be surprised if it's someone who will play regularly.

But that is why it's so urgent..

Desperate for another CB in my opinion.

How is it just cover? We only have two specialist centre backs. Which team would willingly go into a 46 game season (excluding cup games) with only two centre backs? We need cover for squad rotation, injuries, loss of form, competition, fatigue prevention, African cup of nations cover for Mbemba and so we don't end up playing people out of position. It is absolutely essential that we get at least one more centre back.

Can't see the logic in what Odin is saying at all to be honest. Injuries, suspensions, loss of form and the likelihood that we'll be playing almost 50 games this season - it's absolutely ESSENTIAL we get another CB in, and even then it's leaving us light. We were light enough last season and have since seen Coloccini and Taylor depart. Anyone suggesting we don't need CB cover needs their head checking like.

I'm not saying we don't need cover, that's exactly what we need but we don't need to be signing someone who will be expecting to play every game. Like the sweaty from Blackburn.

And we don't just have 2, Dummett can play there, in fact it's probably his better position. So we need 1 more in to do us.

Also, what about the lads in the reserves/u21's? They have to play at some point too and i'd rather they cut their teeth this season when the pressure will be off slightly.

But yes, 1 CB in will do i think.

Really not a fan of this "can play there" mentality. Yes, in a pinch or during a match when a substitution is forced upon us. But we should have competent specialist centre backs.

Two other points:

1) Dummet will likely play left back this season so why shift folk around rather than have someone specialist to come in? (except in the case of bare bones emergencies)

2) The rotation thing. We have a LOT of games coming up so having players who can slip straight into their preferred position without having to adjust would be far more useful. Rafa rotates and we have a lot of games. It's not likely to be so that the newcomer suddenly gets ahead of our current two in the pecking order.

Im going to add in a bonus point, wouldn't it be good to have a more experienced centre back for our current young pairing to learn from?

Yes it would be good to get an experienced centre back in, but not at the expense of the two we have that will hopefully,  with experience,  be the two to take us up and beyond.

And I really dont think Dummett moving to centre back is anything other than progression in his case; we still have Mbabu and Haidarra waiting in the wings as (potentially better) left back specialists.

We need a new Frank Dumas to steady the ship when we're a bit buggered, not someone that will be first choice from the off.

/not quite like Frank Dumas obvs, maybe a Killer Killcline[sic]...

Aye, it depends what our plan for Dummet is, if he's ideally part of the first XI  then we cannot really go into a season with the idea of him playing CB or LB when needed. Same with Anita, it's nice to have a player who can fill in multiple places but you want them to be making 15-20 appearances a season, not 46 across several positions.

One CB will be enough imo, everyone is looking at the worst possible outcome but the reality is most teams don't have 4 recognised CBs.

I know we usually have shit tonnes of injuries but that isn't normal, most clubs don't have both their first choice defenders out for long term periods at a time.

Mbemba, Lascelles, new CB, Dummett (who is more of a CB than a fullback anyway)  and who ever else is versatile enough to do a job if necessary is more than enough.

Hayden can play at centre back as well.

But we do though and surely that's the important point.

Every season we've had issues with our lack of squad depth. If Dummett has to move into the centre then our backup LB has to slot in on the left (if Dummett is first choice), then if he's fucked we have to move someone else there (maybe Aarons like last season, fuck knows). Then another goes. We then end up with a makeshift back line and have to stiffen up to accommodate it and stop us from shipping 4 goals a game.

Every season we've had issues with our lack of squad depth. If Dummett has to move into the centre then our backup LB has to slot in on the left (if Dummett is first choice), then if he's f***ed we have to move someone else there (maybe Aarons like last season, f*** knows). Then another goes. We then end up with a makeshift back line and have to stiffen up to accommodate it and stop us from shipping 4 goals a game.

Yeah but I'm advocating that we buy another LB for that very reason and we probably need one anyway.

I agree with what you're saying, just that we shouldn't have to sign a ridiculous amount of players just because our backroom staff as it attains to fitness are incompetent.

Hopefully Rafa is doing his best to sort out those issues.
