Miguel Almirón

Don’t get why he’s not had a chance on the left. Was bizarre when Carroll came on, Joelinton came over to the left and ASM on the right...why doesn’t he just play Almiron left and ASM right?

You mean the position he changed our season from last season ?

I think that is just an easy excuse to mask his limitations.  Even when he first joined under Rafa, his heavy first touch was there for all the world to see.

Yet he was instrumental to our end of season form. He's no perfect, no one of our players are but there is definately a more than good enough player in there.

It's clearly a lack of confidence and playing for a manager that doesn't coach the team. Decent player in there.

The sad thing is it seems to be his work rate rather than anything else that he rates. Sticking with him in the first XI and kept him on today because he ran a lot. If he played in his true position we might get more glimpses of what he’s actually about.

You mean the heavy touch which was never a heavy touch but a good touch which played the ball out of reach of the opposition player and in a location where he could run on to it?

Even today he closed down, ran at Wolves. Alan Smith said he made a heavy touch for Longstaff to shoot onto, but it was actually a perfect ball and Longstaff should have used his left foot not his right.

Our attack was considerably demonstrably better last season once he was in the team, yes would have been nice if he scored a lot but didn't see many whinging about his contribution at the time, he stretched the opposition and kept hitting the post. This season he has lost confidence and probably gets blanked by Bruce cos he's forren or something on the training ground

Is nobody concerned that we don't produce anything from other areas of the pitch? Almiron and Maximin are not producing end product, but they are literally our main players producing football. Where are the other outlets? The full backs are generally invisible, when you are watching other teams they seem to have people bombing from everywhere.

Our attack last season basically had an Almiron-shaped whole in it until we actually signed him. He was exactly what the system needed at that point. The system has gone and he's had to reinvent himself as either a right wing-back or an attacking midfielder without an effective CF to revolve around. The attack just doesn't work at all.

Can't excuse outright sloppy passes or weak efforts of course, and the lad's obviously got some serious limitations, but everyone in the front six has an existential issue because there's no real attacking gameplan.

Well yes, but this all stems from the fact that Bruce was unable to organise his own style of defence so cribbed Rafa's back 3. Unfortuantely Rafa's back 3 worked because Rondon and Perez were good at bringing the rest of the team into the game when the ball did get up field. ASM looks good but also tries to do it all himself and Joelinton just is not even a striker let alone a hold up man. Perez made up for the absence of third midfielder kind of. With this system our wingers are too isolated to be real threats as have to beat too many players, Joelinton is easy for one centre back to deal with and our 2 man midfield can be matched by 2 midfielders leaving another one free.
