I can't be arsed to go and look through 500 pages of an old Pardew thread but I'm pretty sure it must have looked like this one in places. I can't even work out who's on the wind up and who is serious anymore.

I'm going to assume most realise we are sticking to Rafa's system, we're just not doing it quite so well nor can we can adjust during games the way Rafa would/might have.

I don't think anybody is elated by having Steve Bruce as manager - some are just not opposed to giving him credit when his team does a good job.

Not sure why everything has to be at the extreme ends of the spectrum at all times.

such is the world these days sadly

I actively can’t like. It’s sad but it is what it is. His very being riles me, if he’d been after McClaren I could probably have taken and accepted it but after seeing what could have been...

Taking a mate from Singapore to the Everton game so that might flick a switch. Feel so grubby doing so.

Did anyone see these quotes pre match?

“After Huddersfield, for the first time in my life I became a bit reclusive. I never really went out of the house," Bruce told reporters ahead of Thursday's game at Bramall Lane.

"Thankfully I was doing my house up so I would do a bit of labouring. I would get the sausage and chips for the lads. I was just Billy normal. I did that for about six or seven months and then John Benson [Wigan's former general manager] knocked on the door one day.

“I saved myself £50 quid a day in the labourer’s fee! Was it finished? I don’t think so. But it was the first time of ‘What you going to do? What you not going to do?'

I just can't hate him as much as Pardew, still don't like him much but my hatred levels will never ever get Pardew levels of death hoping.

I won't ever hate him as much as Pardew, but that doesn't mean I can't see a poor manager riding a wave of good luck when it's right in front of my face. FWIW, Bruce actually appears to be a worse manager than I had thought despite the results so far. I can't see him improving this side at all even given a free reign with transfers. Which he won't ever have.

Pretty much this, the quotes against him tonight are so bitter it’s hilarious, whatever anyone thinks of him the players are working their socks off still and that’s what I expect at worst of this side.

He came over well after the game and the mocking of him tonight isn’t justified.

Deserves massive credit for telling Dubravka to have the game of his life. Well done.

Totally this.  I mean we won tonight so this may sound hollow but we were totally outplayed by Sheffield United.  This is the worry.  I can't wait to reach 40 points.

Imo, having the ball is not synonymous with outplaying a team. We outdone them them tactically and out-fought them. For all their possession they created nothing when it really mattered and had no idea how to break us down when plan A wasn't working.

I'd count that header that Dubs saved as creating something like.

Second half i think they knew they'd blown their chance.

"When it really mattered" meaning the second half when they had to find a way back into the game. We were very, very comfortable all half.

Still don’t like the bloke as a man or manager. Had this been Rafa in charge in this position I’d be optimistic and thinking we could have a crack at Europe. Doubt we’d have qualified but I reckon we’d have had a go. You just feel under Bruce this is probably peak Newcastle. Mid-table alsorans.

This is it.  We aren't even playing that well, in another universe that's a 4-1 defeat.

Which is when we'll tail off. And I think the twat in charge will happily lead in influencing that mentality.

I don't like Bruce but he has more points than I thought he would at this stage. We are playing very similar to Rafa at moment, good defensively, mix bag attacking.

I am not sure Rafa would have more points from those games. Now I think it will go bad but at the moment he is able to get points, very unlikely to go down and tbh 3 points off 6th

Provided he keeps the team chemistry and spirits up and no rot sets after a poor run of form - he will have more than done his job and what is expected of him.

I'm not particularly fussed about him nor am I fussed about the regime/the way the club is at the minute. I do not go to the games because the bigger picture is we are ambition-less and just exist to "be there".

But I will say, I still do enjoy seeing us win, even under this guy, who we all knew shouldn't be anywhere near the Premier League.

I am not too certain dropping down to the Championship or League 1 for a few years will necessarily bring us better owners - look at Sunderland.

Just enjoy the wins until the shit inevitably hits the fan, its not like we have much else to cheer for.

Severe double standards when it comes to this man v. Rafa.

If Rafa was still in charge, everyone tonight would be lauding his tactics and how he masterminded a win against a form team while having a shit squad etc..

Steve Bruce does it.. “oh the keeper had the game of his life”, “just defend and hope for the best”

I find him excruciating like I do many of those journeymen managers who seem to specialise in teams that battle relegation year in year out. But let’s face it, he’s doing better than any of us thought. He deserves credit for that.

You look at teams like Everton, Arsenal and especially West Ham when we played them, and you see teams who have thrown in the towel for their managers. Players who don’t give a fuck. Don’t want to make any effort while those managers are still there etc.

That’s not nufc. Every single player is putting in a shift. Heads haven’t dropped when we’ve lost.

We’re now 6 points better off and 3 places higher than we were at this stage last season with a better goal difference of +1

All of this without an actual center forward like we had last season with Rondon..

Play defensively and hope for the best.

???

Shelveys goal made it look more comfortable than it was - 9k Sheffield United have a good record at home but our attacking still worries me - it's just not clicking.  Our defence is what is saving us.  Does Bruce deserve some credit?  Only for sticking to the tactics Rafa introduced
