The lack of a statement from NUFC is telling. Ashley would bite this lots hand off, for an invite. Just think of all that exposure for SD!

Not really, only Everton have actively spoken out so far. Would not be remotely surprised if all the other clubs released similar, and the Thumb, Barnes and Ashley stay silent.

Hell putting out a statement involves typing, and doubt Charnley can figure out how to switch a computer on, let alone show some solidarity or backbone with anyone

I do like the way Fernandes' broken English insta quote of "Success can't be buy!" has become a rallying cry.

Something that's been lost a bit in how evil it is is potentially how shit it is, even as a cynical money making scheme. Will people really watch it?  So the idea is you get these clubs to constantly play against each other because you look at a Man City-Barcelona Champions League semi final, and see the PPV and ad revenue for that and think you can rake that in every week?  The appeal of these clubs is the huge worldwide interest they have amongst millions of fans, and all the fans are saying "This is shit, don't want it", but you think that's fine because there's supposedly millions more waiting in the wings in China and Singapore who haven't particularly paid much attention thus far but are gonna want to invest the time and money on watching the same match every three weeks?  You've seen how foreign fans get involved in premier league teams, it's not just watching the players, they want to get on the forums, adopt the rivalries, learn the songs and the history.  That's the "cool" thing about football to non-footballing countries, not 90 minutes where, if you're not particularly familiar with what you're watching, nothing much really seems to happen. And you think you're going to have sponsors lining up to throw money at a football competition football fans fucking hate and will resent anyone who bankrolls it?

Part of me hopes they go through with it and, if the 6 are in the Premier League or not, after the initial morbid curiosity dies down nobody really cares about it, players don't really want to play in it and it's just mentioned as a footnote on the inner pages and at the end of the sports bulletin like a shit Club World Cup that's going on in the background while people are engaged in their local competitions, with the big six either not there at all or playing a second string.  And hopefully everyone chucking money into ESL involvement or Juventus shares loses the lot.

Newcastle United Football Club Statement:

Feeling down about the recent Super League proposal?

Get yourself down to Sports Direct and grab a massive mug, Donnay socks, and a pack of 3 T-shirts for just £20.99.

Then kick back and cozy up, safe in the knowledge that we killed your football a long time ago.

Marvellous

Out of all the clubs’ representatives in the meeting today, we are the ones I worry about. Mike is by far the most easily corruptible. He wants out and couldn’t give a shit what football looks like after he’s left. If the greedy 6 want to bribe one of the little 14 to leverage things behind enemy lines, Mike’s their man.

I expect he's also a vindictive shit. Here's hoping he's looking for some payback.

In all seriousness regardless of Ashleys opinions on this, given the clubs inability to communicate anything over the last 14 years, why would anyone be expecting a statement from them?

No doubt Ashley would love an invite to a competition that guarantees 100s of millions a year with no risk as its been obvious since Keegan left he has nothing but contempt for fans

This is how I feel, I really think call their bluff on this, throw them out of the domestic leagues and see how much interest they actually get in their vanity project (without the current European champions or the runners up.)

As I said the other day, football is quite a dull game for about 85 out of 90 minutes, if you're lucky. It's what at stake that makes the later stages of the CL so exciting. Nobody goes out of their way to watch a group stage game between Atleti and Spurs and after the novelty has worn off, even less people will want to watch that fixture in this thing.

Are we actually going to get any major announcement/development from the PL today, or are they just meeting to start discussions? Can't imagine they could allow this to drag out. A decision needs to be made as soon as possible IMO.

Doubt it...Masters is probably curled up in a ball in the corner crying over how his 'big 6' buddies have screwed him over

If they have to all come crawling back, make them work their way up from the lower leagues again. That would be a great spectacle because the usual Juventus/Rangers formality of a big club getting demoted but knowing they'll go up every season won't apply if there's another five clubs trying to do the same and get out the league at the first time of asking.

I bet they thought this was going to be met with great fanfare and people wanking over how great this was going to be.

Some will have been so naive as to think exactly that.  But some can't even grasp the concept of promotion and relegation, so fuck them.

I'd be interested to see if one or more of them ends up with an ESL Mike Ashley in charge if they spend the first few seasons not competing at the top. You go to the board and say you've got $300m you can spend on three superstar players who might score you a few goals and let you finish 5th, or you can just give that out as bonuses to the board and dividends to shareholders, and then you might finish 10th, but who gives a fuck because your income is from just being in the league and being in matches against Real Madrid with ETORRO graphics all over the screen - not from prize money.

if anybody is shaky on this its Chelsea/Man City they don't need the money and I'm baffled as to why they signed up in the first place they're in it for PR purposes

This is such a great point, wow, I hadn't thought of that.

Afraid of missing out. This founding BS is the carrot and they took it.

The boards of these clubs will have been fed a steady diet of absolutely slick as fuck glossy videos with pumping upbeat soundtrack, showing delighted fans crying with joy at their superstars competing in an elite league.   I'm sure some of them are doing a double take.

Even if it falls flat on its face, those clubs responsible need to be made examples of anyway.

Expulsion from the league if they go ahead with it. Massive points deductions  if they don’t? Is that even possible?
