Hard to argue that the club with the 10th highest top flight points tally of all time, one below us, isn't a PL team like.

They're 17th in the all time PL table, which is probably more realistic, and I guess the longer they stay out of it, the lower their stock will fall. Obviously the PL isn't the be all and end all, and 'football existed before 1992' etc. but at the same time, while the Sunderland fan mentioned they have had 3 top 10 finishes since the PL began (7th, 7th, 10th), they've also only had those three top 12 finishes since 1955, which needs to be taken into account as well, because if you're 73, and pretty old, then you've still only seen 3 top 10 finishes.

I guess age will be a factor and if you're 35-40 then you'll probably have a higher opinion of Newcastle than you would if you were 60, and definitely under 20 and only saw the Ashley years, same with Everton, those over 40 will have a higher opinion as those under 40, and that will apply to most clubs, but in Sunderlands case, bar that FA Cup and one subsequent European campaign, most people still alive won't have seen them challenge for anything, or do anything of real note.

I'd say 14th-17th like the Mackem said is fair, probably towards the lower side of that the longer they are down there. There's about 12 or 13 clubs that most would put ahead of them when taking everything into account, but you could probably say anything from 14th to 20th was fairly realistic.

This idea however that you as a fanbase are completely polar opposites to us is frightening really, If people genuinally believe that of course.

And yet this is the narrative that is constantly peddled on RTG. Not like a Mackem to have any self awareness though is it?

It’s probably why no Sunderland fan sticks around on here to have a reasoned debate.

Seems its impossible without people jumping down your throat despite being honest and realistic.

I will let you’s get on with it.

I think you'll find we were all being ruthlessly realistic when we said you are where you naturally belong.

Yeah, I don't see what he did wrong, his opinion on where they should be is shared by others here so it was hardly an absurd comment

Having said that, since the comparison was raised, this was mild compared to what any Newcastle fan gets on RTG

Ah good, the old big club debate, where nobody can possibly win.

Let's have a look at the metrics with Sunderland;

Stadium: Above average

Fan Base: Above average

Finance: Way below average

History of success: Decent (comparable to us)

Recent history: Very poor

Traditionally considered size: Smaller than Forest, Sheffield Wed but bigger than alot of recent PL clubs (Burnley, Bournemouth, Norwich, etc)

You can look at it whatever way you want but I find it hard to see them as anything other than a biggish sized club. If you consider Newcastle a big club, then in many ways Sunderland shouldnt be far off too.

That mackem lad is right, their fans aren't that much different to ours. The main difference is that of the cretins that they do have, they seem to sink to depths way below ours.

They also won't ever be considered a bigger club than Newcastle. It's not even being shitty, it's just the way it is. Until they have a bigger city, bigger fan base, bigger pull or comparable finances nobody outside of Sunderland would consider them to be bigger than us. Their players live and socialise in Newcastle FFS.

In some ways it's harsh on them because they have had a decent footballing pedigree historically and I can understand why it would do their head in seeing us get all the attention but the longer time goes on, the less peopl from that generation will remind us of a time when Sunderland were decent.

I wouldn't actually begrudge them some moderate success, PL football, perhaps even a trip into Europe, so long as they are still below us.

I find it utterly bizarre that anyone would genuinely believe that there's something inherently different about the wired-in human behaviour of people who live 12 miles away. It's absolutely stupid.

And yet that's so often how wars start. Between people with huge differences even closer in proximity than 12miles

Times change, they're an interchangable yo-yo club in reality of the last 50years and perception.

I mean unitl 2003 or even the takeover Man City getting relegated wasn't even newsworthy it was a regular occurance but that perception and reality has changed lately.

Not sure there’s any need to go two footed on a Sunderland fan coming on the board. Fair enough if they come in chatting shit but otherwise I’d be interested to hear what they make of their current situation financially

We are in a unique position whereby teams come to the SOL and don't even look to attack, making every home game an absolute struggle to get through, likewise all away games are tough as we are a scalp at this level.

Here's the thing..... This misconception that you're something unique at your level is part of your problem.

Like it or not you're a run of the mill League One club at the moment. You're not a scalp for anyone when they are visiting to play you in a half empty arena.

Your support love to talk about "deluded mags" but you've demonstrated exactly that trait since you dropped out of the Premier League and continue to do so.

They're the most deluded set of twats in the country.

Nobody went in two footed at all. The problem with them is that they can dish it out but simply cannot take it back. His comment about the two sets of fans being the same was actually astonishing, considering RTG’s entire ethos is built around the fallacy that their fans are different to ours. As soon as you pull them up for their utter bullshit they instantly flounce off.

Yeah not sure he did anything at all.

But we acknowledged he seemed ok, by the same token he refused to acknowledge the Sunderland supporters in general hate us. Just because he was being reasonable on the face of it, doesn't make that untrue. Nowt against the town or the people who aren't football fans, but the supporters of SAFC don't like NUFC. And he should have owned up to Brexit glee on Wearside, it happened, might as well own it.

Absolutely and their quest for relevancy is nauseating. No-one is thinking about them and if they weren't our local rivals, neither would we.
