Here I love a late surge to save a season me. Remember 7th under Roeder in 06? That was class. Win tomorrow and I'll be buzzing for the rest of the season.

2nd under Daglish in 1997 was after a late surge iirc

unfortunately I can’t see Liverpool beating PSG in the next round, so let’s hope Villa win the EL & finish 5th, and we can get 6th

The way Chelsea are playing I think Everton are realistically the only chance of one of villa or Liverpool not finishing 4th [emoji38]

It's a shame rosenior is being found out so early because we could have done with this Chelsea next season.

Win tomorrow and 5th is back on. It would be fucking insane if we got CL again after this league campaign.

Points wise it's definitely possible. But we just don't have enough genuine quality up top to go on a winning streak IMO. I'm not even thinking about the defence, since I do think we have the players at the back if we can just cut out the mistakes.

Our next 3 games are against 13th, 12th and 14th.

So not great teams but also not teams fighting for relegation. If we can win those 3 games then with a bit of luck we could be within a couple of points of the cl with a better run in than Liverpool certainly.

If we can find the quality to win the next 3 games we've got a great chance

We keep talking about how the lack of time on the training pitch is hampering our preparations, I think one of the biggest beneficiaries of the extra time we'll have after the break will be Big Nick.  Give him two or three days a week working with Eddie and showing him how he wants him to move and position himself and I think we'll see a much better version of him.

The idea of us stringing results and performances together after every win has been based on nothing. We've played like and got the results as proof and looked nothing other than a bang average midtable outfit all season

I did a predictor, and on the last game of the season, we need to beat Fulham who will be miles off it by my calculations, but we also need Everton to beat Spurs to get Europe.

Although if Everton win they will relegate Spurs. The scenario is unlikely but I'd honestly be pretty torn.

Fair to say Makams have more chance of Europe than us ?

Would be the cherry on top that. Unbearable if that happens. Pure embarrassment they’ve done the double over us (again) not to mention look likely to finish above us.

Honestly just wish it was 24th May now.

Whatever happens we need to get as many points as possible and get as high as possible in the table otherwise we run the danger of frittering away our hard-earned Champions League millions by losing merit payments.

Mackems still have Chelsea and Man U among others I think. Plus a few teams fighting relegation but it’ll be close who finishes higher. They could just go on the beach now who knows.

I understand the doom and gloom, obviously, but a couple of weeks ago, it would probably have been accepted that we needed to win at least one of the games against Chelsea and Sunderland to be in with a shot. We did that, but I'd hazard there would be much more optimism now if the results were flipped.

It's not a great position by any means, and the display in the second half on Sunday was incredibly worrying, but with players coming back from injury and several of the teams above us playing each other, Europe definitely isn't out of the question.

Not sure if Europa or Conference League would do us much good? The two seasons where Howe got us to achieve CL were seasons where we weren't in Europe.

To save anyone clicking on it, the article says eighth place (surely more likely now than seventh) can get Europa League. This is in contravention to all earlier analysis I've seen and what AI told me. Such analysis and AI said FIFA rules meant that the best a team finishing eighth off that league position alone was Conference League.

For it to happen, a top 7 team has to win the FA Cup, but that looks likely anyway given who's still in it.

The harder condition is about Liverpool and Villa winning in Europe and finishing in certain league positions.

I take your point, though I think it’s a more pertinent concern with Europa. I don’t think Conference would be much of an issue. We’d be favourites to win it and would be able to rotate regularly given the level of opposition.

A Conference League run would be good fun I think. CL is too stressful at this point

Agree, especially with a rebuilt squad, realistically 5 wins from our last 7 and a team in the top 5 winning the FA cup would get us in Europe
