Scott McTominay

He's athletic, a good ball carrier and he has a goal in his locker. He would be more than capable of slotting in as one of number eights.

Would Manchester United fans agree with any of those things?

Random, but I swear someone on here said he'd be the next Lampard  not having a dig, just funny how things work out.

Maybe he was referring to Frank’s managerial prowess.

Feel like Phillip Billing and Scott McTom would cost the same. Billing is a much better player. Go out and get him instead.

Totally different players and Billing plays as as ten for Bournemouth with license to get forward and roam. He’s way better there than he was deeper at Huddersfield.

Maybe he might do a job but we need better and for the money they would want I’m sure we could do better abroad. Man U don’t sell top players (unless Madrid come calling), if they’re selling he’s deemed not good enough, why should we settle for that.

if we are interested in him, do you think Eddie and Ashworth have got it wrong?

Not really. he was a secondary choice if we didn't make the CL is how I read it.

Yep.

Thankfully though, our "interest" in him seems fictional.

I feel like we saw a few of these stories in January and when the takeover happened. Big teams peddling us their shite for over-inflated fees. Maybe he comes, maybe he doesn't, but to me it still feels like optimistic press briefings over a likely outcome.

Remember when Pope signed and half this forum said it was pointless because Dubs was better/as good, yeah I remember.

That was absurd. I don’t think it was half the forum, mind.

And it’s worth saying Dubravka was overrated on here, as goalkeepers often are because your typical fan doesn’t appreciate that the difference between an average / decent keeper and a very good one at PL level isn’t making flashy saves that keep the scoreline down. Darlow is a great case in point. A mess of a keeper who makes Hollywood saves in amongst being an utter liability with decision making.

Yeah, I agree with that.  Hollywood saves are often the result of poor positioning - and Dubravka's positioning isn't the greatest.  Pope is clearly superior in terms of positioning / angles / decision making, and was when he signed.  Dubravka is a mediore top flight keeper - but that made him superior to what we had at the time.

He's still an excellent 'number 2' if he is happy to stay, though.

Are we using Pope's success to justify the McTominay signing? Just so I'm clear.

No, but it is a reasonable point that some of the more OTT criticism may not be justified - and that if he signed, he might prove himself to be of significantly better quality than the current incumbent of that position.  Just as Pope did.

Personally, I find the 'elite level players only' stuff a bit odd - one top four finish doesn't mean that we're an elite level club yet, and FFP slows our ability to join that club.  Perfectly reasonable for people to think that he isn't much better / is the same as / isn't as good as Longstaff - it is a game of opinions, etc - but I watched what happened to our midfield when Longstaff was out at the end of the season.  I think McTominay is a perfectly talented and capable footballer, and would be better than the current competition for Longstaff - which last season was nobody, and next season would at present potentially be Hayden (if he returns).  There is a danger we're getting ahead of ourselves and making the perfect the enemy of the good.

I don't doubt that in four or five years time, signing a player like McTominay would be a retrograde step and would raise eyebrows and questions - I'm confident we'll be at a much higher level by then.

And of course, we might not even be interested in the lad anyway - it is just speculation until something happens.  I get the feeling that the rumours may be inaccurate this year, now that we have a full recruitment team onboard.

Anthony Gordon followed by Scott McTominay is cause for concern about EH's plans. He needs more elite players than these two.

Yeah, like for example Mudryk, Sancho or Antony. That's the type of signings we need now that we're in the CL.

We are pointing out that plenty said signing Pope was a waste of time and money

I think if we continue to use 3 8s who effectively have to do everything in midfield he wouldn't be a bad option.  If buying bim means we can afford someone like Szobozlai then i wouldnt mind it.  Everyone has noticed who much worse we looked as a team when Longstaff was out and McTominay could be utilised in almost exactly the same role.  Im firmly of the belief that we should be buying players that suit the way our team plays.

Obviously this is all price dependent.
