Only one will arrive on Tyneside, but Newcastle have been given reason to believe that both would like to make the move and are looking to progress talks. Both deals would include either an option or an obligation to buy the player next summer and there is some confidence a breakthrough can be reached with at least one of their Premier League rivals. Newcastle, in an ideal world, would also like a similar sort of move for a right-sided centre back, but sources have told Telegraph Sport there is not much on offer in the market for this type of deal and they do not want to bring a player in just for the sake of it. The club would be willing to cover the cost of the player’s wages but have previously found it difficult to deal with clubs who now perceive them to be a rival for a Champions League place. That remains the big stumbling block although, Arsenal in particular, are thought to be very keen to find a move for Tierney. They would prefer to sell the Scotland international at this stage, but a compromise could be reached that would defer the fee for another 12 months which would help Newcastle navigate their way through FFP concerns. Given the nature of the deal it could be that it has to wait until closer to deadline day, as Arsenal will still hope to part with the 26-year-old and get the money in now. Tierney had an excellent start to his career in north London but is no longer the first-choice left back and wants to play regularly. He would compete with Dan Burn and Matt Targett at St James’ Park. Burn is a specialist centre back who played almost every game at left-back last season and did so again in the opening day victory over Aston Villa Dealing with Chelsea has been far more difficult for Newcastle in recent times. Chelsea quoted an asking price of more than £50 million when the the club enquired about midfielder Conor Gallagher back in January and rebuffed several other loan offers in the same window. Marc Cucurella has not lived up to expectations at Stamford Bridge CREDIT: Getty Images/Marc Atkins But the London club are under pressure to offload players again having spent a British record £115 million on midfielder Moisies Caicedo this week. Cucurella, 25, only arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton for £60 million 12 months ago but failed to impress last season and did not feature in Chelsea’s draw with Liverpool on Sunday. As with Tierney, Chelsea would prefer to sell the Spain international but Newcastle will offer to take him on loan instead, with a small up fee attached and an option or obligation to buy. Newcastle have already signed Sandro Tonali (£56 million), Harvey Barnes (£38 million) and Tino Livramento (£32 million) in this window and have only sold Allan Saint Maximin to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia for £25 million. That means their net spend is around £101 million this summer, which is close to their entire summer budget as defined by Financial Fair Play Rules. Newcastle, who are still looking abroad for possible alternatives if their domestic rivals refuse to reach a compromise, are also looking to loan or sell Ryan Fraser, Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick. Puke forgetting we also sold Wood and Darlow this summer. Granted we got next to nowt for Darlow but £15m for Wood was a hefty chunk.
Dr.Spaceman
Tierney >>>>>>>> Cucurella. Weird that we're going for someone completely different to what got us into the CL.
STM
My instinct is that Howe would turn Cucurella into the best left back in the world. Just feels very Howe.

The lads did a great job for what we needed (a relegation battle at one stage) But you would not be looking to buy either Burn or Targett as your future lb options if they were on the market today. Wood was confirmed after he’d played 3 games but his fee will help FFP. Also if you do the math the £75m approx budget looks right all along with the ASM sale giving us that wriggle room for 1 o 2 financially creative signings it seems. £101-£15.4=£76.4. Add Shelvey sale too and that figure closer to £75m.
The Prophet
Edwards has taken a lot of abuse over the £75 million budget even though it was Hope who reported it
Yorkie
If you only count year 1 of your incoming player's fee, due to amortisation, our 'net spend' would comfortably be in the black, wouldn't it? One fifth of Tonali's fee + Minteh's fee + Barnes' fee + Livramento's fee is 30.6million Euros according to Transfermarkt; whereas we've brought in 44million. St1pe
Cucurella is arguably worse defensively than Burn at left back. Tierney for me.

The Prophet
Aye. Think the total gross spend (minus add ons) is circa £125 million. From an accountancy perspective it'll be about £31 million this window. We do have to consider deals still on that books though (Joelinton, Trippier, Bruno, Targett, Pope, Isak, Gordon, etc). We've brought in about £40 million for Wood and ASM combined which isn't terrible going.
Kid Icarus
Most journos get things wrong, Edwards mainly gets stick because he's a bellend Him being wrong a lot of the time is just an excuse to give him more stick Edited August 14, 2023 by Kid Icarus

SUPERTOON
I’d take either on loan with an option. Don’t think either are long term solutions though.
KingArthur
I see no reason why neither of these teams would loan us their player and help us out. Cucurella is a possibility, but has expensive wages and has not been very good.
McCormick
Tierney would be a fantastic addition imo.
Ben
Every thing he writes is so open though he constantly sets himself up for an "I told you so" I'm one of the worst posters on here and I could write better content than Luke Edwards. If he hadn't blocked me I'd tell him as well.

Hanshithispantz
I reckon Cucarella would be class for us tbh, he's more in the Trippier mould and with Livramento on the other side we'd have a pretty varied selection of fullbacks. He seems a bit underrated defensively, and wouldn't have an issue dropping into a back three in possession if we go that route.
The Prophet
Apparently Tierney isn't the best in the air, but Arsenal fans seem to rate him really highly other than that. He's always looked really good whenever I've watched him.
Zero
Cucu would be expensive. If we have that much of money may be we should enquire Milan for Hernandez

Stifler
Milan have probably blocked our number now. If we get them in the Champions League (which is think we will), we’ll probably have to call Inter’s offices to deal with the fixture details. Kimbo
I would hope that we have a foreign option as well, we can’t rely on being able to do a deal with Arsenal or Chelsea.
