NUFC Transfer Rumours

Recommended Posts

#NUFC are now “actively looking” to sign a right-sided centre-back this month amid their defensive injury crisis, according to

@CraigHope_DM

via YouTube. The club are searching for a player aged between 19-23 who could come in and make an immediate impact on the starting XI, for what is likely to be a significant permanent transfer fee - and an acceleration of business initially planned for the summer.

That emphasis on value reflects lessons learned across the league. January can tempt clubs into reactive spending, but Newcastle are acutely aware of the cost of mistakes. “If you sign the wrong player, you’re carrying that for a three, four, five year contract,” Howe added. “Are the right players available in January?”

Erm. Summer window says hi...

To be fair, the main scrutiny I remember reading about the 23/24 window was less about the quality of the players, and more whether we'd signed the right players relative to what we needed for that coming season, and whether we'd brought in enough depth in particular going into a busy champions league season - that concern ended up being pretty valid with the benefit hindsight.

Last summer was largely similar, it's less about the ability of the players we signed for me and more whether they were what we needed. I'd have been more patient with the Ramsey signing, for example, if we'd signed a creative midfielder too.

In terms of depth, we had two players for every position. Sure the quality was quite skewed across the squad, but Tonali receiving a ban, Barnes breaking his foot, Pope dislocating his shoulder, along with unfortunate lower back injuries for Burn and Anderson were part of a catalogue of unforeseeable absences that season. There's an argument to say we should have brought in more first team quality, but it seemed the focus was on the wider squad.

Last summer it felt like three transfer windows of minimal incomings left holes all over the squad. It felt like GK, RCB, RW and ST was the bare minimum and I was relieved to see us sign a CM, it's just a shame they haven't all hit the ground running.

I'm not sure we'll ever get the play maker that's craved because there's so few of them in the game and managers are usually uncomfortable to play them, unless the forward in front of them is a work horse.

The Scalvini links are back. He's had more injuries this season. Talented lad, but we need durability.

A good player no doubt but massive risk given the circumstances. Yes huge payoff potentially but could easily be something we get ridiculed over.

Intuition says that if he’s struggling to keep fit in a league with less physical demands than the PL, that niggling injuries would be inevitable.

That seems an incredibly simple thing to say it's all down to Eddie.

What about the structures in place that help the coach such as performance analysts, scouting, fitness/medical teams etc

We're 6th in the league, in another cup semi final, going to go through to another Champions League round and in the FA Cup.

All after a summer where our most valuable asset went on strike. We must be doing something right?

The last part is surely on Howe though keeping it together? We had no fucking DoF for the window :D A CEO who was on way out and no replacement at the time.

Think we give far too much credit to what’s happening up stairs, when it’s on the pitch from what was set up multiple seasons back that’s still pulling out the stops.

I don’t understand this insistence on young players, we should be looking at a leader 27-28 as we are going to lose Tripper, Schar and Burn will be phased out. It’s not always about sell on value.

27-28 year old are peak value now. We have to be clever because of PSR. 23-24 year olds that can still improve are cheaper.

Shar must be out for a good while then.

Problem is we need a RB, LB and a CB and I have zero faith in our recruitment team.

Last RB we signed was Livramento, last LB we signed was Hall and last CB we signed was Thiaw. Embarrassing recruitment.

You are going back nearly 3 years with those two signings and Thiaw was an overpay. Thiaw is a great player but we paid 10m over what was originally accepted from Como.

Paul Mitchell said our recruitment wasn’t fit for purpose and then left when he couldn’t stamp his authority.

Paul Mitchell also evidently rubbed everyone up the wrong way, it was never going to work out irrespective of whether he had any valid points about recruitment. Last summer was a poor window, other than that recruitment has been good.

People didn't want us to sell Trippier to Bayern 2 years back so been no need to sign an RB.

People continue to be happy with Burn & Schar as options, which on top of Botman & now Thiaw means no CBs.

LB I agree with. Think we needed cover in the summer once Targett left.
