Indeed, the cynical view would be that, with so much anger on Tyneside directed at the board, the perfect way to soothe things would be to leak an attempt to bring Keegan back in the hope it paints the club in a more favourable light.

This is my feeling to. To calm the masses Ashley arranged a last minute meeting with Keegan, he knew what Keegan would demand and he knew that he wouldn't agree to this.

Hence Ashley comes out with the " see lads I done me best but Kev doesn't love you like I do.Please let me wear me Toon top an glug pints with you again".

Or maybe I'm just getting cynical in me owld age.

Which is why there's no way that Ashley would have tried this, knowing there's a good chance he wouldn't have been able to convince Keegan, just to appease fans.

LMA made a short press release at 10pm to say that no satisfactory conclusion was reached. Apparently no further talks planned.

KK has always got on well with MA and so seeing him face to face is no surprise. I think everyone was amazed that MA stayed in the USA when it all blew up but maybe he wanted the Board to take the flak.

If KK is threatening unfair dismissal then MA is bound to have to listen to KK's grievance against the Board. He may have hoped to persuade MA into some form of compromise but this obviously hasn't happened.

For all KK's historic success in the transfer market his record since beimg at SJP first time round is mixed at best. If Wise / Jimenez were instrumental in bringing in Guti and Colo then it seems logical to back them with Xisco and Gonzalez. I think the Board are happier with Enrique as LB than KK is and view Zog/Bassong as reasonable cover. Ashley is backing the Board to spend his money. I'm happy with the quality of the signings from what I've seen but wish there had been a couple more top players.

On top of this the Club alledgedly tried to sell Owen and Barton on deadline day. I personally think this was the big issue even if the above was the straw that broke the camel. KK was quite clear from the start of the summer that he wanted Owen's contract sorted. I don't think the Board rate Owen as highly and clearly dragged the contract discussions on. Even at the death the press knew about the improved contract offer before MO did. Must be the only pro-active press release of the summer. I blame the Board for this - Owen should have had a new contract in June or else KK should have been told there was to be no new contract and any xfer offers would be considered. Neither happened. I think KKs frustration with this lack of clarity and his lack of input was the real dispute.

I don't think MA wants KK to go but equally he is happy with the existing transfer arrangements. I think that if the club want a coach/manager then KK is the wrong person and that we should move on. Equally if this is the arrangement then Wise / Jimenez / Llambias need to start communicating with the public directly and not hide behind the manager. Llambias needs to get everyone working as a team......they only appear to speak in a crisis. This guy has made no impression so far and Mort is clearly missed.

Can't see how this is going to end without tears all round. Maybe a lucky run in the League cup can save the season.

I back the board in trying to get rid of an over paid thug and a seriously overpaid crock who's contract's running out, its called looking after the CLUBS best interest shame KK couldn't see past his own personal problems in that respect.

Shame this didn't happen, would have been great to get him back with the control he wants, but at the same time realising certain players in certain circumstances need to be moved on if possible.

The LMA are our only source of info in this affair atm and because the club have shown there total ineptitude with the media over the last 2 weeks everyone is just speculating even me .The club press office are either being starved of information or the Cashleys casino pals have set up a bunker mentality fuelling more anger and hatred which imho is great for us the fans as the buffoons running our club are sitting ducks for the press sniping and is putting a whole lot more pressure on themselves ,inexperience with the media or pig headedness draw your own conclusion but i say keep it up and the press will keep up the barrage of shit against our owner who has made the fans his enemy and the press can work in our favour . Can't really make a judgement on this without knowing what 'compromise' was offered.  "Come back, I'll be your friend and give you a pay rise", "I'll ask Dennis to get your more players next time" or "Right, I'll sack the lot of them, you can be in charge."

Ashley did it to save his neck

By PAUL JIGGINS

THE moment Kevin Keegan walked out of St James’ Park, Mike Ashley knew he was going to be the target for a bucket-load of abuse.

That is why the Newcastle owner had to meet King Kev in London last night in a bid to get the Toon legend back in charge.

It was the only way to appease the Geordie faithful and save Ashley’s neck.

There are security fears over Ashley’s safety as he is expected to turn up for today’s clash against Hull, with the Toon Army furious their hero had been driven out of the club last week.

Any prospect of King Kev returning seemed impossible after his acrimonious departure as manager.

Then came a glimmer of hope but, unfortunately for Ashley, talks between the parties appeared to fall apart last night.

A Newcastle source said: “The only way Mike Ashley could show his face safely at St James’ is if Kevin Keegan is back in charge of the team.

“The fans despised Ashley when Kev left and they were ready to show him their feelings in no uncertain terms.”

Ashley showed an enormous amount of bottle in trying to bring Keegan back home again.

The Newcastle supremo and chief lieutenants Dennis Wise, Derek Llambias, Tony Jiminez and David Williamson were all turned into public enemies when Keegan stormed away, furious at their interference in team affairs.

Keegan was sick of being told he could not have the players he wanted — and sick of Wise identifying the players Newcastle were prepared to bring in.

The angry supporters lay the blame for the Messiah’s resignation squarely at the door of the boardroom.

And the black ’n white striped hordes planned to let Ashley ’n Co feel the full force of their anger this afternoon.

The Toon Army had organised no less than FIVE demonstrations in Newcastle’s city centre before, during and after the match.

One fans’ group called for supporters to congregate an hour before kick-off at the old Milburn reception area of the ground.

Northumbria Police allocated an extra 150 officers to go on duty to ensure the protests do not get out of hand.

A source said: “This is really the only solution for Ashley. All the protests, all the security problems — everything disappears if Kev comes back. In fact, Ashley could even go back to standing among the supporters if he pulls this off.”

Ashley, who bought the club last year, has been advised to reassess his personal security arrangements for when he attends games.

Toon officials want to beef up protection inside the stadium with extra stewards stationed around the directors’ box.

Ashley’s move to bring Keegan back underlines his plan to sell the club — with King Kev at the helm, Newcastle would look like a more attractive proposition for would-be buyers.

But a spokesman for the League Managers’ Association last night revealed talks “failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion.”

The silence from inside St James’ Park since Keegan’s exit on September 4 has been deafening.

Nine days on and still no one at the club has spoken officially about what actually happened with King Kev.

Ashley and director of football Wise, who is not far behind him in the hated stakes on Tyneside, have refused to comment. Nor have vice-president Jiminez and executive director Williamson.

Ashley refused to speak to SunSport when confronted at the Sports Direct AGM on Wednesday and there was no Press conference yesterday. Even managing director Llambias has pulled his programme notes for today’s match.

Instead it has been left to caretaker boss Chris Hughton, who has been at the Toon for seven months, and skipper Michael Owen to try to explain events.

Hughton, in today’s match programme, said: “Nobody needs me to tell them that the last fortnight has been a difficult one for everyone connected with Newcastle United.

“Following the departures of Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott, I was asked by the board to take temporary charge of first-team affairs.

“That has meant working with the players and getting them ready for today’s game against Hull City.

“And that has been my sole focus over the past week.

“I’ve been assisted this week at the training ground by Academy director Richard Money and Alan Thompson, not to forget goalkeeping coach Paul Barron.

“All of us have been in football long enough to know you have to deal with whatever challenges come your way. And the same applies to the players.”

Owen, in his programme notes, said: “Whatever the events of the past couple of weeks off the field, all the players are proper professionals, we are all paid to do a job, and we have to go out and continue to do that job.

“The only thing the players can do is play to their best and get good results for the club, and we have to focus on doing that.”

I've just picked my wife up from work and had to pass the ground, I parked next to the Strawberry to wait for her.  I couldn't see anybody in Shearers or the club shop.  You can hardly walk along the path on the opposite side of the road because of the media.  A lorry is driving around with an advert on it, it says Bring Back King Kev and has a big photograph of him on both sides and on the back.

Steve Wraith walked along and went straight to the cameras so expect to see him on the tele.

If the LMA had not come out with their statement last night then everyone would still be expecting Keegan to come back as the club has not got the decency to be honest with the supporters.

Precisely. :dave:

I hope (but doubt) that when the dust settles we get an explanation.

However for now I can see the club and Keegan's stance of not directly speaking to anyone, it would just result in more mud slinging.

But similarly I can see why people feel frustrated in not hearing anything.

IYAM the club were not saying anything in the hope that it'd calm the protests tomorrow. They're probably cursing the LMA for coming out and making that statement. It's a joke we're relying on the League Manager's Association to keep us up to date with what's happening.

Has Lambrini even given any kind of interview/statement yet on anything?

I would like to know if talks are over? or are they going to meet again to try and sort it out. What one of them is being the unreasonable one ? and was this a last gasp attempt by Ashley to try and look as though he is the decent one and that Keegan is being the awkward one, at least it showed KK was open to coming back as manager but was Ashley every really open to taking him back.

Will we ever know the truth.

Can I just ask, what the hell does IYAM stand for? I've been trying to figure it out for ages and can't come up with anything even close. Normally I'm OK with acronyms like that but I'm struggling. So far I've thought of (Amongst others):

- I Yell At Mice

- Into Your Aching Mouth

- If You're A Mackem

- It's Yule At Mine

All possible, but they don't seem to make sense in the context used. Help?
