Ronaldo
Perch is exactly the sort of player you want on your bench if you're not willing to spend good money on the squad.
Wullie
I just don't get the reaction that's all. Good player but not one we need. If he's playing 10-15 games a season in midfield then we're doing something wrong. But we have been doing something wrong, and will probably continue to do so. If Gosling comes onto the pitch for a single second next season then we've fucked up selling Perch. You say he shouldn't be starting ahead of Tiote - Tiote will have to seriously up his game if he wants to get anywhere near Perch's level from last season, and that's not even a ringing endorsement of Perch. BlueStar
I just don't get the reaction that's all. Good player but not one we need. If he's playing 10-15 games a season in midfield then we're doing something wrong. Well he's versitile and we won't get much money for him. Plus he was pretty awful to start with, and through putting in some effort he improved and had some impressive games which, along with generally coming across as a pretty likeable guy gave him a bit of a cult status ('We've got Perchino' being said only half in jest kind of sums up what it's like following a team that's not currently destined for greatness). If it had been the other way around and he'd started off looking great and waned to the player he is now, more people might want rid. I guess player popularity isn't always rational or something that can be quantified with stat, but that's one of the things about being a football fan I guess. Plus, with Ashley, we don't know who we'll replace him with. It could be an up and coming French youngster. It could be a 32 year old goalkeeper. It could be fucking nowt. Guest
It's no good being 'versatile' if he's weak in one area and poor in the other. He's a poor man's David Batty which isn't the worst thing to be but we can do better and should do better.
Segun Oluwaniyi
He's not a total liability at RB. Disagree. He is a liability all over the pitch at this level. Perch is genuinely a great tackler and works hard enough, but these are his only acceptable skills. He's not a good enough footballer to be reliable against the level of teams in this league. He can't pass accurately or shoot at all, and isn't a particularly intelligent player defensively in midfield or defense, either.

Pilko
Perch's shooting, when he's had the chance to shoot, is more than adequate, Baba.

Mole_Toonfan
Really don't understand the reaction.... We have more than enough players in midfield for this not to matter.... at least 3 of them should have got more time than Perch last season. At CB he has decent games sometimes but he's no more reliable than Williamson and at fullback he should be 5th choice at best. He was a good pro, always gives his best and seems a decent bloke but doubt we will regret this move too much.

Troll
Reminds me of Sibierski. Not good enough if we want to progress, but tried his hardest and performed above expectations.
Cajun
Despite being a better player (on paper) he put in better performances than Tiote last season and that is because Perch is a lot more aware of what he is capable of whereas Tiote has been given the impression he is better than he is and capable of doing what he really can't. Perch is also as good if not better than Williamson at centre back, either way he is a different option here. Given Colo's lack of pace I would much prefer Perch alongside him when we come up against sides who have pace up front and the rest of our centre backs (except Williamson) are out, we have been so easy to beat at times against average sides because they know if you can get someone like Shane Long running at Colo & Williamson he can easily just knock it in front of himself and absolutely destroy them for pace. Any forward with a hint of pace must spunk at the sight of those two on the team sheet. He's not brilliant but that is why he is a perennial back up but he is certainly good enough for that. I would be surprised if there was a subs bench last season where he was the worst player on it.

midds
Would much rather see players come in first before we move a few on. Harper, Simpson and Perch made 73 appearances between them last season and they need to be replaced. I can see the logic for moving all 3 on but for a club/manager who whinged like a girl about lack of squad depth it's a bit of a pisstake to shift them on before looking at replacements. LFEE
Presume Vainqueur is who we are replacing him with @KHeneage: William Vainqueur will not be coming to #NUFC. He has signed a new deal at Standard Liege. @d_demyttenaere with the details.

Ketsbaia
What Standard can afford in wages should be a pittance compared to us - even with Ashley! And it's hardly ambition keeping him there. Very strange.

Tiresias
Like him as a utility player, but ultimately can't get too upset over him going. Not the most gifted footballer but his application and willingness to adapt to being played wherever week in week out is admirable, wish him well
The College Dropout
Aaron Hughes comparison is lazy. Aaron Hughes was a regular first-team Premiership fullback for 6 seasons. Including playing in the Champions League and UEFA Cup. He's never even played in the Championship. James Perch is a good lad but he's no Hughes ffs. Tiresias
He was a decent DM (and indeed CB when settled) against poorer teams but he was terrible at tracking no 10s and clever forwards, just lost them too easily again and again
KaKa
Bigi looks like he can do what Perch does at DM. Time fo rhim to get some games as a back up. Perch is quite poor at CB and RB, so we really dont need to be using him in these positions. We've got 4 centre backs now anyway, and at right back we have Santon, Yanga-Mbiwa and Anita who can play there.
