NYD 1980

Newcastle United 3 mackems 1

A mental day in the Toon.

Any of the older Newcastle fans remember this song...

I remember the day we played sunland at home...

The red and white bastards they scored the first goal

But when it was over and when it was done

We beat the mackems by 3 goals to one

Young Peter Cartwright he scored our first goal

Then Tom Cass netted the best of them all

5 minutes late a penalty was given

If Alan missed he would have been forgiven

But when he stepped up

He did not miss

For the last half hour...we just took the piss.

I assume that’s also the game that:

“Hark now hear, the Geordies sing;

when Sunderland ran away.

And we will fight forever more,

because of New Year’s Day”

comes from. Does that get sung much these days? I suppose we’ve not played them in so long :cheesy:

That game was absolutely class. Wes Saunders, who lived round the corner from me and was a Sunderland fan growing up, had  his best game by far for us. Beardsley was magnificent, there was two makems sent off and I was stood in the scoreboard with my  quietly fuming makem mate who couldn't get a ticket for the Leazes (away end in those days).

"Happy New year, happy new year hello, hello "

I was there that day. Walked there in the snow.

Better than the Bolton one imo, just unfortunate there’s only the one camera angle so it doesn’t get as much attention.

I was there and took my niece and nephew from Germany to there first ever Toon game as they were staying over Xmas. Think a load of me and pals with their kids went that day. What a goal, what a player!
