Ayozé Pérez (now playing for Real Betis)

He's the most Rafa player in the side. He can be frustrating because baring the odd moment of ingenuity from him the nippy little player from a few years ago has completely gone. I get the Jonas comparison but he's obviously not that good (I know that hasn't been said), Jonas despite his many flaws was a decent Premiership player, I don't think Perez is. He's like Gouffran from last year in that he works hard, follows orders, and is just about good enough in front of goal to win a couple of games.

We obviously need a proper number 10 next year like, but due to our lack of quality in all areas of the pitch he's doing as good a job as most in keeping us up. But if I have to tell you that then you have been wasting your time watching Newcastle over the years.

I think you're being really unfair comparing him to Gouffran like. Ayo's got more talent in his left toe.

In the Premiership he's more suited maybe but Gouffran last year was a pretty important player for us in a similar way (to how Perez is now, not last year). We lacked a decent left winger and he ended up making the role his own and was almost an ever-present due to the fact he just did what he was told and was technically just about good enough to not be completely out of his depth.

To clarify I'm not trying to say Gouffran is better than Perez, or has ever been better. I've probably worded it like a tit but I mean Perez this year is similar to Gouffran last year in that he's filling a role we lack quality in by basically just working hard.

On the flip side someone like Diame is actually looking a good Premiership midfielder now. I don't think Perez looks a legitimately good number 10, just as I don't think Gouffran looked a good Championship winger - they've just been Rafa'd into being pretty vital for how the side operates.

He was generally as rubbish on the ball as he always is, which is annoying and frustrating, but he's still crucial to the way we play in most other areas of his game until we get someone better. Took his goal really well.

I don't agree that he was rubbish on the ball. He often goes down seemingly blind alleys but tends to win a free kick when he does so. He reminds me of Jonas in that way.

Overall, he was a useful outlet, was involved in much of the build up and looked more dangerous when Slimani came on.

Jonas won free kicks, more often than not Perez gets dispossessed and told to get up. Today he won two free kicks that I can remember, but got dispossessed a handful of times. I don't see how anyone can defend his quality in possession anymore like, it's the other stuff he brings that make it worth putting up with. His positioning, closing down, first time passing, off the ball movement, and finishing are all good enough. But more often than not on the ball he's needlessly poor and it's really frustrating. A number 10 is still a very high priority.

I was in the Leazes. Maybe you got a better view.

What you using Whoscored for then? [emoji38]

Because you said that he doesn't get fouled much, whereas it's such an obvious aspect of his play to anyone with eyes that it's listed as one of his top four attributes on a stats site.

Cool your jets, man. I just disagree with you, it's not like I don't watch every match as well.

And FWIW, such obvious aspects of play as...

https://www.whoscored.com/Players/105171/Show/Jamaal-Lascelles

Weak at tackling.

Weak at concentrating.

Weak at passing.

Strong at concentrating.

Apparently has no weaknesses.

It's by no means fool proof because the above are quite obviously nonsense.

Haha, the Shelvey one is gold.

I think he is great and love it when he scores winners to shut the knackas up.

Same here.

 he probably gets the most grief from the crowd out of the usual starting eleven like. The old timers all seem to hate his guts.

I took great pleasure in being a total cunt to the bloke next to me who’d been slating him all game.

His best game for a long while today even without the goal.

Amazing how we all see games differently, i thought he was OK, gave it away too much in the middle of the 2nd half when he was weak as piss when he had it. Still pops up with a crucial goal, still like him a fair bit.

We are better with him as our 10 at the moment and he’s provided some class passes to create goals for us in the last two matches. Long may it continue, dude puts in a shift every match.

Yeah, decent player, but needs to stop using boot polish in his hair. It's fucking appalling and genuinely detracts from the enjoyment on the pitch he provides.

Don't diss his Action Man hair.

I don’t think he played well, gave the ball away a lot, and made runs into the wrong area when he did bother to make a run. He’s not pysical enough for this league. The only thing he has about him is his finishing, give him a half decent chance and he’ll score. If he had the chances Gayle had today or even this season, same for Joselu then he would be one of the leagues top scorers. The question is why isn’t he the one getting into those positions?

Didn't realise it was his ball out to Atsu in the first place. With pacy widemen (an upgrade on Atsu on one side, Kenedy on the other) and someone like Slimani in front of him and we might see the best of him. I feel sorry for him when he gets the ball back to goal, he has two defenders up his arse and a midfielder closing him down and he gets pelters for losing it.

Can be a very frustrating player but i think it's natural that he's looked better recently when we've been pressing more with the whole team. In the past when we've been deep he can be running around alone like a headless chicken, with support his nuisance causing is effective.

He's got good vision actually and decent technique. I can see why out of all the players we've got he gets given the 10 role. What he is bad at imo, is playing with his back to goal and he has to that quite a bit here.

It was noticeable that H'field marked him heavily. I think more of his team mates should have shown for the ball more in those situations. We'd have had overlaps, etc elsewhere as a result.

Re-watched extended highlights of the game yesterday and Perez was involved in so much good work going forward for us. Don't get any of the criticism like, it seems mental after the way he's been playing lately. The oldies do seem to hate him for no good reason.

He's not good back to goal and gets bullied but given his size, I'm not sure what people expect.

He should have a place at the club for the foreseeable future. Unless we get fortunes to spend, he's at worst a good squad player.

Rafa talked about trust the other week, Perez is a player Rafa trusts and rightly so.

I think I speak for everyone when I say, of course we need another option in that position for next season.
