Rafael Benitez

Now Sportsmail can reveal that the Spaniard has axed days off in the build-up to matches, a tradition under sacked head coach Steve McClaren which saw the players enjoy time off 72 hours before a game.

Benitez has also told his squad they cannot head off at lunchtime every day and will instead use the afternoon to work on tactics, team shape and fitness.

How much training was McClaren actually doing? [emoji38]

3 days off before a game ffs [emoji38]

Thats how i read it, he cant have had us in for 4 days a week and off each lunch time

The lunchtime thing on its own is bizarre, no afternoon training? Eh?

Aren't there quite a lot of teams like that?

Everyone has made a big deal out of Poch at Spurs, with his double sessions.

Nice e-mail from Rafa this morning.

Rafa Bentiez:

First let me start by thanking you all for the heartfelt reception I have received since I arrived. It was an honour to be asked to take charge of this club and I could not have asked for a warmer welcome.

As you know, work began with intensity from the moment my coaching staff and I arrived. Our first job is to make sure we remain a Premier League club and this week we have committed everything we have to making that happen.

Whilst the result on Monday at Leicester wasn’t what we wanted, I was pleased with parts of what I saw. We have worked intensively on the areas that need improvement and I am confident we go into Sunday’s game well-prepared.

I have been in the opposing dug out at St. James’ Park and I know that when I take my place on the home side, I will be backed by some of the most passionate fans in the world.  In fact, the strength of your famous support is one of the many things that drew me to this club.

On Sunday, Sunderland’s team will face not only the 11 players on the pitch, but a 50,000-strong army.  I hope you will not underestimate the importance of the role you will play on Sunday; you can make the crucial difference for us.

Let’s create a wall of sound and a tide of black and white. I am sure there will be respect on both sides, that's important, but I have no doubt that the atmosphere you will create will be electrifying and imposing.

We are ready…

In turn, I know the team will play with the passion befitting of this historic fixture.  We will give our all to honour the tradition of the derby and take the victory we need.

I know you’ll be behind them.

The bit about the wall of sound and tide of black and white gives you goosebumps just reading it.

 really? Sounded straight off the NUFC.co.uk new manager press release template to me

Aye

Every time I read them, I still expect them to end the email with something along the lines of "and tickets are still available at the low, low price of £.."

Yeah, suppose they train differently as the season progresses. Seems wasted time though if the players cant/wont follow tactical instruction, you could work on things that arent that physically demanding surely. Rafa obviously thinks somethings possible.

They've spent so much time asking for fans to create an atmosphere, they've no idea it would/does happen naturally if you make inspiring changes for your club. You dont have to ask for it, thats why it looks a bit try-hard. Didnt help they started when we were woeful to watch, as if that was the issue.

I think it's all about the context of what your opinion of someone already is. McLaren or Pardew do it and it's just more bullshit. Benitez does it and it holds more weight to it, which is a good thing regardless imo.

That sort of email just reads so much differently when it's coming from a world class manager. You want to get behind them. If it was McClaren/Carver/Pardew etc. you just hate them more for it.

This is what I thought, Carver and McClaren can ask for it until they're blue in the face but if what we're seeing on the pitch is soul destroying it just drains the atmosphere. Rafa just being there will create a wall of sound, if we do the business on the pitch then it will be deafening. No need to ask Rafa, just do what you do and we'll do what we do!
