He’s obviously not on the same level as others in the squad talent wise, but he’s made himself pretty valuable to Guardiola through his work rate, he’s basically a water carrier. I was previously doubtful of his ability at that level but it's disingenuous to suggest that he didn't play consistently well in what was an all conquering side. He barely had a single bad game. Pep rotates all of his wide players freely, none of them will ever start or even play in 38 league games. Bernardo only started 24 league games, Foden even less. As @geordie_b said he’s had one poor season (I don’t think anyone can argue that?) and his second season started off slowly but ended very well in the home straight albeit in the Final of the ECL and this years CS the other day he wasn’t anything special again. I don’t disagree he’d probably get into most teams in the league as if you get into Man City’s then it goes without saying. However I do think he’d “look” possibly a better player elsewhere. He's basically there to hold his position right on the touchline outwide and draw defenders to him whilst creating space for the midfielders and Haaland. City pretty much play with a front 5 in attack, two wide players to stretch the opposition as wide as possible then two '10s' exploiting the gaps between the fullback and CBs who are occupied by Haaland. They don't even use pacy wingers anymore just ones very good at dribbling, holding the ball and passing. Wide players stats probably suffer in this system but they are clearly doing what Pep wants them to do. It's daft to compare Grealish to Sterling and Jesus as that was a totally different setup with essentially wide forwards getting into to the box as much as possible. I get it Pep absolutely values him highly, likely because he is doing exactly what is being asked of him. I just think within Peps parameters he could still express himself a bit more. I liked him a lot at Villa and it's clear the instructions have hamstrung him a fair bit compared to then. Whenever we played Man City the last few seasons I was far more worried about Foden and Mahrez causing us problems, even if Pep valued them less. Regardless of roles, I just don't think he has been as threatening as any of those other players. Bernardo and Mahrez on the opposite side in the current system still cause far more problems. Definitely more of an 8 than a 6. His transitional play is excellent mind and he seemed to do better on the ball the less time he had on it. When he had a proper DM beside him he had some brilliant games. There is genuinely a really good player in there with Fred and by all accounts he's an amazing lad. I'm sad to see him go.
