I can take or leave Maddison at this point.

Agreed. If we finish in our current position, our pool of similar quality players is much deeper. Also, if Kane leaves, I see the opposite for Spurs.

It’s the style though, isn’t it? We don’t have anyone who really specialises in what he does.

FWIW I’m not really set on him anyway, but it would be interesting.

Eh ? Why on earth would you not want Maddison ?

Seems to be injured quite a fair bit, would obviously take him, but what @TRC said. I know we'll buy players of his quality or higher if we have CL football, so I wouldn't be miffed if he went elsewhere.

He can open up defences, score worldies and is general quality on the ball. I don't know what he brings off of it or winning the ball back for that matter. I suppose he would play between our midfield and forward line, so there'd be cover in Eddie's system.

How about... we sign Maddison, he gets the summer to get up to speed on what is required of a midfielder in our set up, Howe can start him on the bench until he's confident he understands what his responsibilities are?

We assume that mid-twenties players can't adapt to new systems and roles. There's a reason why Pep Guardiola often refuses to immediately start new signings when the arrive. Grealish being an example.

Maddison would be an absolute elite signing. I'd be more worried about City or Liverpool stepping in, as to whether he's good enough FFS. [emoji38]

He does seem to pick up a few injuries but then leave that to the experts.

He won't choose Spurs over us. Trippier and Wilson will be on the blower.

The contract situation could make him a rare English upgrade within a relatively reasonable price range. I think unless another more established European frequenter blows us out of the water we'll be all over him.

Fitness issues.

Debatable he fits our current system.

Possible wage demands.

Noises he’d prefer a move south.

Cheaper & possibly better alternatives that might fit better if smart in the transfer market.

Maddison is the best player in the world  that we’d actually have a chance of attracting at this stage of the project. I get the fact that he may not be as industrious as someone like Longstaff but he’s no shrinking violet either. He’d be an amazing addition.

Who’s better and cheaper than Maddison then  ?

Dont say Diaby, because he’s neither.

We signed Isak, a far bigger profile than Maddison.

We did very well there but bigger clubs were wary of his goal output at Sociedad and the “steep” 60m+ price-tag. Worked out brilliantly for us though. I also wouldn’t say he had a far bigger profile than Maddison at the time, either.
