Hanshithispantz
3 minutes ago, Jack27 said: This will be fun "Newcastle United are looking into a summer move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay as manager Eddie Howe feels the Scotland international has the physical attributes to succeed in his system. McTominay has had a frustrating time under Erik ten Hag and has been used mainly as a substitute in recent months with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Fred all ahead of him in the pecking order when fit and available. That has encouraged Newcastle to firm up the tentative interest they showed in January, when it became quickly apparent that Manchester United would not consider letting him join a team they considered to be a direct rival for a Champions League place. Newcastle hope that position will have softened in the summer when Ten Hag will need to raise extra transfer funds by selling squad players. McTominay is not the sort of glamorous name that will excite supporters but he has been on Newcastle’s wanted list for the last 12 months with chief scout Steve Nickson, director of football Dan Ashworth and Howe all agreeing he would add something different to the squad. Newcastle were looking to sign a defensive midfielder at the start of January but rather than strengthen in that area, they weakened it by allowing Jonjo Shelvey to sign for Nottingham Forest. Howe, who has admitted it has left him short in that department, always prefers to sign players he has watched extensively and tends to prioritise players with experience of playing in British football. McTominay would be used as a deep lying midfielder to shield the back four, allowing playmaker Bruno Guimarares to play further up the pitch to add more creativity in the final third. With his height and athleticism, McTominay would add some muscle in midfield and would also add a threat at set-pieces. At the age of 26, it is also believed he is a player who can still improve under Howe’s coaching and thrive in the holistic training ground environment. In turn, McTominay is believed to be open to the idea of moving to the North East and impressed by the vast strides the team have made this season. With Newcastle almost certain to be playing in Europe next season, McTominay would also add vital experience of playing on the continent. This is something Newcastle’s squad lacks and this is something that will be attractive in all their potential targets in the summer. Newcastle have already expressed an interest in signing another Scotland international in Arsenal left back Kieran Tierney, who has gained plenty of European experience with Celtic and Arsenal. As with Anthony Gordon, who arrived from Everton for £40m in January, the scouting team at Newcastle believe there is more to come from McTominay who probably needs a fresh start away from Manchester United. Newcastle will not finalise any transfer plans until May at the earliest as their budget will be determined by what level of European competition they are playing in. But Howe will be looking to add five or six players to the squad to give it greater depth to cope with the dual demands of continental and domestic football next season. In an ideal world, Newcastle will add a defensive midfielder and a creative one in the summer and have not given up on the idea they will be able to sign England international James Maddison from Leicester City. There is a fear, though, that Maddison wants to join a club that is in a position to win silverware immediately as well as able to offer higher wages than Newcastle currently can." My dream signing. And Bayern bought Davies at which age and from which league? That's all I'm saying, doesn't have to be specifically him, although he is very similar to Davies trajectory wise so far. TheInfiniteOdyssey
McTominay would be a shocking signing, he adds nothing to the current squad, both in terms of quality and midfield profile. He’s also in a price-bracket which is incredibly overinflated.
Scoot
Aye I'm not going to lie, that just isn't a signing that excites me at all. It's a proper Everton signing.

Agree that he'd be a very uninspiring signing but he'd literally be filling a vacancy left by Shelvey, so it's an improvement on nothing. And surely he's an upgrade on Shelvey himself? But yeah, if our aspiration is to consistently rub shoulders with the likes of Man Utd then it feels unlikely that we'd achieve that by signing their fringe players. SteV
The question is would signing McTominay generate more debate/argument/bitching on here than signing Gordon did?

Dokko
I'm quite happy to let the club get on with it transfer wise, but McTominy is such a pointless signing. He'd do OK. So what?

No. There was something to debate with that one (and I was in the for Gordon camp) This one isn't what we need. We need to steer clear of manure castoffs. Unless Howe has seen something Ten Hag et al have not, which is very possible. I would say Shelvey has a very different skillset to McTominay, it’s not really a fair comparison of midfield profiles. Bluntly, McTominay would be a bit of an empty shirt, another body for body’s sake. The ambitions of the club at this stage should be to add genuine quality. Also, I’d be okay with it if we’re talking £10 - £15m, but given inflated prices for Premier League British talents, we’re likely going to be paying £30m, which doesn’t make sense. I guess it’s not just Howe though is it. It’s Nixon and Ashworth who have a say too. He wouldn’t be my choice by a country mile but if all 3 agree then he must have something. I’m hoping we go for someone else a bit more exciting and likely cheaper from abroad but if he does come I’ll get behind him.
TRon
This talk of "but he'd improve us" is missing the point. Every signing we make has to be one that will challenge Man U, I don't see how buying their cast offs is taking us where we want to go. Unless Howe has seen something everyone else is missing, including Ten Hag.
Shak
How much do we think McTominay would cost? If he's available relatively cheaply I could see the logic as we're going to need a lot of bodies in this summer and FFP means we're not going to be able to get the best player on our list in every position. If going for McTominay instead of the best DM we could attract saves us 20 or 30 million and that money means we can buy an absolutely top class winger instead of a good one then it may be a worthwhile sacrifice? I don't know, though. Seems we'll end up paying at least close to 20m for him and I'd be disappointed that we couldn't find a younger player with much more potential to develop for that kind of money. Isn't that a huge part of what Ashworth was supposed to bring to the table? McTominay just seems like such an unimaginative target. Maybe Howe just absolutely loves him? He's a decent player, he's homegrown, he's a replacement for Shelvey and he's arguably better than Longstaff. He would also only cost £15-20m. That's what he brings to the table. It's a depth signing at worst.
Whitley mag
No excuse for this after we’ve unearthed Botman, Bruno and Isak. Who would have been the British equivalent and what would they have cost even if they were about. ‘Howe, who has admitted it has left him short in that department, always prefers to sign players he has watched extensively and tends to prioritise players with experience of playing in British football’.
