Also he is one off being the all-time highest direct free kick goal scorer in the PL of all time. "Decent" indeed.

He's almost on a par with Seb Larsson's GTG ratio in terms of FKs in the PL.  And we all would have dreamed of Larsson running around in our midfield.

Covers the most distance of any pl player in the league for the third season running. I’ll give you that he may not be the most athletic but he certainly has “the legs”.

I changed my post straight after almost as it didnt read tight. He might have the stamina but with Bruno i would prefer a player that is slightly more athletic. Also think that long term we can use the money better.

So why is it none of the bigger clubs have made a bid for him do you think?

They were asking for silly money? Didn’t want to leave? Who knows. His ability is unquestionable though, imo anyway.

I think people just see Southampton struggling and see his freekicks on match of the day and so think that's all he does. They are not watching games outside of the top teams.

He's a quality player. Hope he gets a decent move because he definitely deserves to be able to really showcase his game in matches that more people actually watch.

Yeah, you're right.  You know what I've seen and what I've not seen - forgot about that.  Condescending load of shite mate.

He must have just had off days against us, then. As I thought he did absolutely fuck all the three times we played them.

He probably couldn't handle our aggressive press in midfield. The dead balls give him plenty of time to gather his composure and take his time, maybe in the heat of live play he gets lost a bit in the midfield scrum.

In what way is he not complete?

Close control? Check

Passing?  Check check

Vision? Check check

Stamina/ graft? Check check

Defensive ability? Check (ish)

Long distance shooting? Check

Leadership: check

set piece ability? Check check check

I’d say his only weakness is elite athleticism (in terms of pace and power) otherwise I’d say he’s pretty complete.

I'll go with the set piece ability.  The rest?  Sorry, I don't agree - and at 28 there's little that could be improved with coaching.

Passing and stamina you wouldn’t agree with? I’d argue he doesn’t need extensive coaching and can come in and do well almost instantly.

Anyway, appears we’ll have to agree to disagree here mate :)

Yep :) - we'll be linked with approx. 400 players between now and September, so god knows who we'll end up with in any case

Won't be surprised if Liverpool pick him up on the cheap when Southampton go down.

Similar to when they signed Henderson and Wijnaldum. Could see him easily doing just as well as those two did for them.

Gini in our midfield under MClaren was usually invisible and only showed up when he was scoring. At Liverpool he was part of a midfield three with Henderson that was key to them winning the Prem and the Champions League.

I didn't address you specifically with that post.

I've heard these takes on Ward Prowse a fair bit, about how he is just a dead ball specialist.

When I watch the games I don't see that at all. In an even half decent team with a better role, ideally in a midfield three, it would be so much more clear that he's a very good player.

Someone is going to get a great deal there. It will probably be Liverpool, as he would be in line with the likes of Henderson, Gini and Milner, who were all really savvy signings for them that contributed massively to the trophies they've won under Klopp.

On the cheap? The article above says his price would be £40m+ after relegation.

Don’t see Liverpool going for JWP at all. If anything they will be looking to get the age down of their squad.

Very unlikely!

The only Southampton midfielder I’d be taking at these prices quoted would be Lavia.

The only 3 British midfielders I want us entertaining in the summer are Maddison , Rice and Bellingham.

Same age as Milner when they signed him. Similar profile too, as he has a similar engine and fitness.

I doubt  that very much.

Me too. For the alleged price of a JWP, you could get a Milenkovic-Savic. I’m sure the club knows who is the more ‘complete’ midfielder.

Yeah. But when they signed Milner the rest of the team wasn’t as old as now I bet (average age) I see them going for high quality players now with plenty of years ahead of them. Not spending quite a bit of money on players that won’t bring the average age down.

Another player we wouldn't have a chance of signing at this stage.

Just google Milenkovic-Savic and have a look at the types of clubs he is typically linked with.

I think they will sign both types as they will need a number of new central midfielders.

If Southampton go down I also don't think they will be asking for what that article claims they will.
