Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 Newcastle United (02/09/23)

Mistake by Pope for their goal, otherwise we have looked reasonable, nothing more, even with them dominating.

Mind you we havent really threatened them at all and look a bit passive.

Their defense seem to able to pick their passes and then we are backtracking pretty quick.

Pedro, the young irish lad and mitoma all look very good, solly as well.

They are playing very well, have to give them their due.

Lets see what we do in the second half, Bruno has been better today at least that is a positive, isak too...

Too many mistakes today and prior games is just not forgivable at this level.

Also think the players are not up for it today. Lacking in fighting spirit. Sad.

Yeah its Liverpool last 20 minutes all over again. Passive, full of errors, just pathetic.

Either one of Tonali or Bruno has to drop deep, and the other push forward. I'd prefer Bruno to reprise his 1st season role when he scored for fun as a #8 than a #6.

Tonali not a 6.

We should take Joelinton off and go 4-2-3-1. Probably with Isak as the #10 off Wilson

Tonali and Bruno in a double pivot should be good. Right now we have none of our midfielders who can bridge the gap between midfield and attack and then we've two wingers who are full of energy but have very little in the way of quality on the ball.

It's definitely a real cause for concern that we look so devoid of quality on the ball, hard to see where a goal is coming from.

This has felt like the polar opposite of an Eddie Howe Newcastle team, we've had no intensity in our play at all, our passing is all over the place, haven't had any runners when we do get into the final third, and no-one arriving into the box from midfield. Its just been very very flat.

This is exactly my read on it, posted very similar in the Howe thread

We gifted them a goal - but they've been miles better than us.  Really really disappointing first half.  We should be doing better against Brighton.

They have been better than us, but I honestly don’t think they have caused us any problems, we have caused our own.

I think our heads dropped after we didn’t score with those first 2/3 chances.

Lacking shape, especially in the middle.

Pope mistake aside, we've kept them mostly at arm's length, so not a disaster, but not good either.

First 10 minutes showed we could get in behind, but we didn't/couldn't build on it.

We just seem so flat

Also, too many times they pass the ball straight through our 3 midfielders

One of them needs to sit

Against any team that has players dropping into half spaces, we struggle. We don't have a natural DM. Bruno isn't really good enough there defensively.

Tonali sees the game in a completely different way to the rest of the team.

Plays with so much more urgency and tempo, and no one else is alert enough to it.

Until they get used to playing with him it's going to be very hit and miss.

Going forward, I agree. He's a little soft and slow in running back though. Half arsed blocking the shot and not busting a gut to get back a few times. No idea who is being asked to do what here in our midfield. Their all cancelling each other out.
