At some point he’s got to come off the bench and impact a game for real. Beating a man and playing one nice cross isn’t enough man.

Agree. One step of Gordon if that's the case mind. At least his balls go in the box

Crying about the fee achieves nothing. It’s clear we overpaid but if we want him to ever find any form then backing him like the crowd did against PSV doesn’t hurt.

He’s not as bad a player as he has been so far for us and think there have been positive signs on his last two cameos. Would really like to see him get a start soon. You have to build on something.

The price you pay for something is how you measure value. It’s perhaps not the only metric but it’s the most important particularly in a PSR world.

Why do you think it’s always brought up (positively) regarding Schar? He's been incredible value.

I think he’ll have a good season next time around. He’s certainly not going anywhere. Gordon is probably the closest match/most recent example, in terms of position, age and buying for potential. Also, for having the kind of ‘game changing to anonymous’ range of performances all of our (anybody’s?) wingers are notorious for.

In 2022-23 Gordon played 18 times for Everton, and scored 3 goals. He played 16 times for us and scored 1. So 4 in 34 (not sure how many from the bench or how many assists). In 2023-24 he scored 12 from 48 for us (11 from 35 in PL). In 2024-25 9 in 42 (6 in 35 PL). In 2025-26 he has 9 from 30 so far (2 in 18 PL).

In 2024-25, Elanga scored 6 in 43 for Forest (all 6 in 38 PL games). He’s still 23 and improving. I think he’ll get double figures next year. I also think he’ll continue to frustrate us. It’s what they do—when they’re not delighting us.

I agree. But at some point.  As a fan. Looking at a player that is trying. Shouldn’t we make an even bigger effort to support him?

First match I saw him play for us shook me. Didn’t look a player at all. Every game since he’s further proved it. Consistently poor first touch and short passing. Can’t beat a man.

So it’s established he’s shit. Cool. Now let’s try and get the best version of him.  He’s not the answer.  But he’s all we have.

When I think I’ve clocked a players level. I just accept it if they are trying their best.

I'm not some doom and gloom merchant. He is what he is, let's get support him to be the best he can be. He does have talents.

Odd using Gordon as an example giving he’s a penalty taker and has been underwhelming at best for a year and a half.

Was more thinking there were a lot of people who thought we had signed, consults technical coaching  manual, a right knacker in the first season he was with us. Yet he had a phenomenal second season.

Really nice article.

I think the stand-out mistakes and the poor 1v1 ability are what wind fans up, especially when they are set against someone.

I feel like he's been turning a corner slightly though. Even against Villa he made a really confident foot-to-foot skill move and got away from his defender but overdid the power and the ball ran out of play.

Also think Woltemade being taken out so often is not ideal for them building an understanding.

He’s got a run of games coming up where he will be afforded more space to counter in. Question though, does he start many of them? Probably PSG, that’s it and Murphy will be back.
