Up until last summer they did, that may now have changed, but still doesn't really alter the point.

Again though, it's much of a muchness. Both working under financial restrictions for four sessons, similar squad costs, similar wage bill, two CL qualifications each and potentially a trophy each. Both have done very well, but I don't think there's a convincing case to say Emery would have done a better job here. That's the only point I'm making really.

Up until this season, I agree - but this season, it’s hard to picture this sort of drop-off.  Emery obviously knows how to handle European campaigns - Howe appears to have learned the sum total of nothing since the last one, which has been compounded by wasting hundreds of millions last summer.

Yeah, I agree - for one I have doubts that Emery would’ve matched Howe’s first 18 months.  I’m not sure he could have extracted the uplifts from the likes of Almiron, Joelinton and Murphy.

That's a different debate, but I'd agree Emery is a lot more seasoned at managing a European campaign, granted we're yet to see how Howe would cope with the lesser intensity of the Europa League.

Just being open to a couple of January loans made a world of difference to Villa last season and should be something we review going forward.

It might be wrong, but my perception of Emery is that he's less wedded to one way of playing. He seems more open to switching formations and intensity levels given different opposition.

In any case it doesn't really matter since his window of coming to Newcastle has gone. He's pretty much entrenched at Villa now, and he'll only move from there if a cartel club comes in, or a massive European club.

Mourinho linked by Jacobs

Mourinho coming here has always felt inevitable to me. Never wanted it to happen but it's always felt to me that he does.

The way things are going, it's definitely not impossible, sadly.

If they'd want a young up-and-coming coach obviously it won't be Mourinho but there would be potentially quite a large pool.

If they want a "name" (perhaps if PIF decide that's what they want...) then it'll be Mourinho. I think any other alternatives would either be preoccupied by the World Cup (Ancelotti, Nagelsmann) or likely to be a bit out of reach (Xavi, Alonso)

The only reason why I think Mourinho would be a good idea in the interim is he will at least tell Luke Edwards to fuck off, when the local press inevitably go after any new manager from day one for not being Eddie Howe.

The rest of Mourinho is no good, mind.

I quite like mourinho after watching the all or nothing spurs documentary he come across as canny fella.

He also has the European experience and has had great success with littler underdog teams and gets the best out of them.

He gives youth a chance knows when to rotate effectively, his football might not be as pleasing on the eye but I don't think we'd ever lose as many games after leading with him at the helm.

For all the people saying "Who's better than Howe out there ?"

The lad with hardly any managerial experience who got Burnley relegated, has turned out to be very good at Bayern and this article explains why.

Sometimes you've got to look beyond the end of your nose to find the best solution to a problem.

I'd hope that if Howe did exit stage right, then we'd try and be creative about where his successor could come from.

Worse, it’s reminding me of all the times I said “Why the fuck would anyone want steve bruce here”. That didn’t end well.

I loved benitez his style was built from the back, at the moment we could do with that we've conceded a hell of a lot of goals and our midfield don't protect our back four very well considering we drop into a 4-5-1 at will.

You have been moaning for ages about Howe not playing possession based football, but would be happy with Mourinho?

He plays that style so does benitez. they don't tend to just hump it long or to the flanks everytime during a match either.

Mourinho is perennially linked. There's about as much need to get wound up about this as there was Hopkinson saying we'll discuss the season's performance at the end of the season.
