Been acting quite erratic this season which is interesting - could see him walking soon to be fair.

It's one of the reasons I was always happy we got Eddie over him. I can go along with the idea their tactical level is identical, but I'd take Eddie's character all day long.

I was expecting Villa to really take the initiative when we went down to 10 men, but they just didn’t. They were still very slow in the build up and allowed us to get back.

Cant see Emery lasting much longer if that’s how they usually play.

I wonder how different things would be in they got into Champions League. Wild to think about how thin the margins are.

Probably not much. I’m sure they would have had to buy their loan players including Rashford, who since he turned up against us in midweek, has been dropped for not turning up to training.

They would have just been stuck with him at the club, and the same PSR problems would have stuck.

It dos seem like Villa are now at a crossroads, are they going to turn it around and compete again, or are they going to fall away and succumb to PSR?

Without Emery, I can’t see who would have them back up challenging, maybe Nuno aside.

Similar to Sheff Utd. One poor pass and they blow promotion. Sunderland go on to spend £200m or so, Sheff Utd are bottom of the Championship without a point. Mad.

The end is nigh for Emery I reckon, there's a decent read in the Athletic about it today.

Would be interested to get @brummie take.

Mental if they get rid of him, outside looking in, their sporting director is the big problem.

Looking at the current options available, who do Villa get if they sack Emery? As all the available options are a step down, by a big distance too, and people like Silva and Iraola are a risk.

Pleased we didn't sign Watkins, sounds like he's declining massively

And Villa fans slating Malen and Guessand who some on here wanted us to sign

Honestly think players generally peak earlier nowadays apart from some exceptions. They play so much football so young their bodies can't keep up. Especially physical players.

Yeah, sad reality is qualifying/not qualifying for the CL is relevant to us and Villa as relates each other but makes no difference now in the bigger picture due to these f*cking rules.

It would probably have staved off some sales for a year and kept some momentum if they'd qualified at the most given their PSR situation. And we did qualify and lost Isak and were outbid for other targets anyway.

I don’t think we talk enough about how good the balance is between Howe, Tindall, and Jones when it comes to this too. Tindall and especially Jones always seem to have their arms around players. I think Howe sets the tone but Tindall/Jones do a lot of the real work in building the camaraderie and unity in the squad from the coaches’ side.

The similarities between our window last summer and Villa's this year are so striking. Sounds like a PSR fire sale replica? Absolute group killer.

Howe is a very good man manager, I'm not sure Emery is quite as good at that part if there's serious unrest in the camp.

I think the difference is last year, and the year before, we mainly just stuck with what we had.

Villa rolled the dice.

Is it wages that has fucked Villa or the FFP revenue?

If its the revenue, I feel for them as they've sold absolutely loads and got £80m for doing brilliantly in the champions league, then getting Europa. What more could be expected of them

If wages, then no sympathy at all as its from poor decisions

They gambled the house on Rashford and Asensio getting them back into the champions league when they got them on loan in January . Having said that it was only a few months ago a lot of us were saying we had a much better first 11 than them but they had a much stronger squad so clearly something has gone badly wrong so far this season .

I don’t think of Iraola as much of a risk at all tbh. If anything i could see him turning Villa down and looking for other offers. I feel like he’d be perfect for them.

As for the PSR/wages stuff - Brummie would know better. The wages have been a gamble and an issue for years - see also Everton - but I don’t know the main issues why their revenue has not been improving enough. Other than the ground, which is the obvious one.

You just can’t generate enough revenue without magic money unless you upgrade or completely rebuild the ground. Arsenal did it, we did it, Everton are doing it. Liverpool did to an extent. City lucked into a new stadium and used the magic money to help. Chelsea have done as much as they can for now. West Ham thought they’d found a way round it, but fortunately that seems to have backfired.

Villa have been trying to upgrade Villa Park for years. The most substantial recent plans (expanding capacity significantly) were floating around for a while but put on hold a couple of years ago. They’ve just submitted new plans this year - don’t know who’s paying for it or any details. @brummie will know. Until then they will struggle to generate enough money to compete. You would have thought they could do so though with their strong academy, much like we did from mid-2000s to mid-2010s.
