More Perez to ManU rumours.... IF we did sell him in January, what would a realistic fee be? £20-25m?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/11984184/Manchester-United-consider-January-move-for-Newcastle-striker-Ayoze-Perez.html

The journalist is making a lot of assumptions in that article mind. He says Perez would jump at the chance of a move to Man U, but what's that based on? I think he'd probably prefer starting for us at the moment than go to Manchester to sit on their bench.

Howay man.

It's not that daft, it would be a step backward for Perez to go and sit on Man U's bench at this point in his career. He's only just nailed down a starting spot here.

By "nailed down" you mean made our manager see logic and reason?

It's based on fan opinion rather than evidence though. Even when it's completely illogical, footballers will always go for the big move, he'd obviously go, they all would.

If there is any truth in it at all then he will be off imo. Lad is easily better than some of the options those 3 clubs have, and not one player would turn down such a move.

Somewhere between 10 and 15m most likely...

Hope we can hang onto him until at least the summer then his price may increase a bit, but we all know they will all be off if serious offers come in for them.

I love Perez, but with any real quality we got on the cheap, selling is too easy an option.

I hope we say no unless its £30m plus.

Carroll was free but we still ripped Liverpool's eyes out for him.  We've let players go on the cheap in the past of course.  But when they know they've got something special (which they don't always but I think they do with Perez) what they paid for him doesn't seem to come into it.

Of course if they had any brains they'd do whatever it takes to keep him, at least for a while.  The improvement and future potential he has is immense.  Even from a purely monetary point of view (which is all they care about after all) holding on to him for a few more years makes absolute sense, even if it means a large wage raise in the meantime.

Shouldn't be selling anyway but doubt we'd get much over £20m for him

Agree, ever since Carroll we've been awful at getting good value from our sales.

Got a good price for Debuchy imo.

In hindsight yes given his injuries and the emergence of Bellerin but at the time he was in his prime and being signed as a definite starter for a title challenging team so not that great a price

It's still baffling how he hardly played in our opening matches!

Steve McClaren: Ayoze Perez has been a shining light during Newcastle United's dark days

Newcastle United boss thinks Ayoze Perez's contributions have made a huge difference in the last few weeks

Steve McClaren feels that man of the moment Ayoze Perez has been Newcastle United’s shining light after watching the Magpies claw their way out of the relegation zone.

The 22-year-old, who netted the all important goal at AFC Bournemouth, is currently being scouted by Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. He is also expected to be handed a Spain call-up next spring if he maintains his form over the winter months.

Perez has now scored 10 goals in just 33 Premier League starts since signing for Newcastle from Tenerife in summer 2014.

McClaren told the Chronicle: “One of the players that has come out is Ayo Perez. We have found a good little position and he’s thriving in it. He has came out of his shell.

“You go into any club and they will want a player who fans will want their name on the back of their shirt, they are heroes to the young fans. If we can get that it’s great.

“You look at Wijnaldum too, he’s another great example to follow. Ayo is similar.”

McClaren and his backroom team have tried to change the culture at the club’s Benton base since his appointment in June and has also tried to get players to work harder.

He feels that Perez’s chasing back to defend is there for all to see at the moment. Indeed, the Spanish forward’s feisty backtracking and tackling at Dean Court had Bournemouth fans rattled last weekend.`

McClaren said: “What Ayo has done is, he’s been good on the ball but he’s been good off it. He has been terrific off the ball. He loses the ball in training but he gets it back.

“He doesn’t get it back in a normal way, he’s a bit of a pest. And he wraps his leg around you and takes the ball.”

McClaren has now been in the job five months, but feels that there has a lot of progress at the club’s Benton HQ since the Magpies lost back to back home games to newly-promoted Watford and then Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup.

McClaren reflected: “This or that didn’t work out, but we said pre-Chelsea, after the Sheff Wed and Watford games, that we had to change the team around a bit.

“We knew we’d looked at everything by then and we decided to go this way.”

The Newcastle head coach also feels that the early weeks for the new look backroom team were all about picking up the pieces from the last campaign, not least a late season run of eight defeats in a row in the Premier League.

He said: “Does that not affect you? It didn’t affect us (the coaching team) because we were coming in with a ‘Let’s go’ attitude.

“We’ve had to look and give everybody an opportunity. We’ve had to give everybody a chance.”

Now that's refreshing to hear, Mr Pardew you cunt.

It's not that baffling, it's clear McClaren didn't know our squad very well and was relying on the useless input of those who were already at the club. I'm sure he wouldn't have let Mehdi Abeid go if he'd seen his performances from last season before he got injured.

That's his own bad and smacks of lack of due diligence. Abeid and Ayoze trained all summer with him too.

I think he went with Cisse on reputation and seniority over Ayoze. As for Abeid, maybe the club already had a deal in place and were keen for the deal to go through. Still suggests that McClaren is either spineless or just has poor judgement of a player. I'm not suggesting that Abeid was a fantastic player either, just we are very short of his type of box to box midfielder.

You would have to believe Abeid was absolutely essential to veto a transfer that was already in place (and the player might have wanted) TBH. From looking at it, you would just see a young reserve player who'd spent most of his time injured or on loan. Just bad timing most likely.

From what we know, Carver and Pardew before him never really rated Abeid, so I can only assume that Carver was the prime instigator for selling him. Just this week Carver was moaning about Tiote not being available with all his qualities and how McClaren is lucky to have him back. I just don't think McClaren did enough homework on the form of some of our more well known players and obviously knew very little about Abeid.

Let's not forget the abortion of a pre-season we had. Absolutely unprofessional at all levels. Regardless of where we end up this season, someone needs to take responsibility for that, and Charnley and McClaren seem as culpable as each other for it (former more so, of course, as the word is it was his plan along with Carver's).

McLaren came out and openly complained about the pre-season arrangements. no real research or thought had gone into them. carver was mouthing off towards the end of last season how he was already making plans with charnley for preseason training and friendlies.
