I was actually thinking about this, isn't a false nine essentially a slightly more attacking CAM that brings wingers or inside forwards into play and allows them to get into positions to shoot. Tiresias Posted January 13, 2021 Share Posted January 13, 2021 If you take 'false no 9' which is definitely a thing (and I have heard of false no 7s too, wingers who basically play more as strikers isnt it?) essentially all it means is that the players role is different from that which is traditionally indicated by his starting position on the pitch. So Bruce is saying that they both started directly behind the striker, which they did because we played very deep defensively to start with, and it differed from traditional footballing roles in that neither decided to play any actual football. A false 10 is therefore a player who operates in the space occupied by a typical 10; but without the necessary skill set. A disaster. We are truly useless at attacking and defending that part of the pitch. Even last night SU were passing it past and through Hayden/Hendrick into the space, with 3 CBs just sitting so deep. Leicester destroyed us by isolating how square Shelvey and Longstaff were the other week. Attacking wise, it's non-existent. No rotation of forward players into pockets, no overloads, no playing between opposition lines.
