Newcastle boss Steve Bruce speaking to Match of the Day: "It was a difficult evening for us against a very good Southampton team but we didn't do enough. We weren't aggressive enough and we found it very difficult. The goals we gave away probably summed up our evening. We gave it away far too cheaply and far too often.

"To do it you have to be good with the ball and make sure you look after it better than we did. That's why the players play at this level because they are expected to.

"From six minutes in we gifted them the first goal then it was a difficult night all round. We were nowhere near where we were five days ago. That's my biggest issue - that we go up and down. It was a poor, poor performance.

"We were a shadow of the team I saw against Everton. We have to make sure we're better against Chelsea. There's a few shirts available, a few place up for grabs. We had to play it forward quickly and off the front but we just couldn't do it. It was a really difficult evening. We were beaten by the better team.

"There's always going to be a reaction but that reaction is too often. That inconsistency is what nags at me.

I hate this ‘we weren’t aggressive enough talk’.

We don’t need to be aggressive, we just need to be able to pass the ball and work on it in training.

We need to get rid of players who don’t perform and go hiding during games (Hendrick) instead of making them the first name on the team sheet.

We need a plan and approach instead of hitting the ball long or passing back to our keeper hoping something opens up or fall kindly for us, some sort of alternative plan that doesn’t include ASM running though the whole defence to score or set up a worldie.

We don’t need to be aggressive, being aggressive is why we keep giving away cheap free kicks and penalties.

“For two days now, we've talked about playing through their press”.

Just as well he didn’t give away our best defender in a back three at playing out comfortably from the back for a year, without replacing him then.

He hasn't got slightest clue how to play through a press. He knows how to hoof it long and this was one of those games he should have done what he knows best.

Notice how he mentioned the Everton win in the first sentence to the first question. Reminding everyone that they won last week and therefore it's just inconsistency because they won last week you know.

The fact is that it's the exact opposite, we're really consistent. Our performances are fucking stinking the vast majority of the time with the odd 25 minute spell every 5 or 6 games where we're not absolutely atrocious - they're the blips. The normal is horrific to endure and there's zero entertainment or enjoyment to be had, it's painful. But hey, "magnificent start" according to Jamie Redknapp tonight and that's what neutrals will hear and assume. Beat Everton last week and now this tonight, cuh, never saw that coming eh? So inconsistent Newcastle eh? Just don't know which side is going to turn up! lol

Fuck clean off

He got lucky last week that we played an Everton team without Digne, Richarlison & James Rodriguez. His two other wins have came against managers cut from the same cloth. We should have lost at Spurs & Wolves. The Man Utd game was horrific, and the two games we’ve played against teams with players I’d say are similar standard to ours man for man, but have a manager in the dugout with a philosophy, he’s been shown up.

Wish he’d fuck off.

Here's me thinking we'll either play abysmally and nick something or play abysmally and get well beaten. Just the usual outlook you have when you've made a good start under a top manager.

Just had flashes of our next manager if Ashley stays will be Tony Pulis.

According to those stats he'd be an improvement 😂

😭

Ah yes, Tony Pulis.  Heard him co-commentating on the Burnley match earlier this evening on 5Live. He was championing the introduction of Jay Rodriguez because at least he would "run around a bit more"

Another good nights work under this dope I see, and another couple of soft tissue injuries. This clown deserves no credit when we win, and maximum criticism when we lose.

The most amateurish and clueless management set up in the league bar none.

He just puts them out there and hopes for the best.

Yep, to think Hasenhüttl was appointed six months earlier and look at the difference - they have a very good style of play and identity - we are just a complete shambles!

Clueless bellend who would do well to be managing a Championship Club never mind a Premier League club!
