Xisco urged to take his chance against Hull City

Jan 14 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

SPANISH striker Xisco has been told to grab his opportunity with both hands if he is thrown a career lifeline against Hull City in the FA Cup tonight.

Geordie boy Andy Carroll is extremely doubtful with a tight hamstring sustained in training and is not likely to be risked until Saturday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers.

It means the onus swings on to the £5.8m signing whose arrival coincided with Kevin Keegan’s departure in September.

Xisco has not played since October when he appeared as sub against West Brom in the final 13 minutes and has been nursing a hamstring injury.

The former Deportivo la Coruna star’s only highlight since joining the club, ironically, came when scored on his debut against the Tigers just days after Keegan’s departure rocked the world of football and United were gunned down 2-1.

The Palma-born striker is available for transfer from St James’s Park, but there are unlikely to be any takers given that FIFA regulations state that players cannot play for more than two clubs in a season and Xisco has appeared for United and Depor in competitive matches.

Kinnear told the Chronicle: “It’s crunch time for Xisco.

“But if he takes his opportunity, he’ll be OK.

“He’s got to take a leaf out of Andy Carroll and Shola Ameobi’s book, who have both come in and done extremely well for me.

“They’re all injured, but this is an opportunity for him to show what he can do.

“He’s been been carrying injuries for a fair length of time now, and my only worry is that he hasn’t had 90 minutes in him.

“I’ll be worried about his fitness level, but we need another striker with Michael Owen, and there’s a possibility he will start.”

People are going to give Xisco a lot of criticism but don't forget how completely lacking in match fitness and sharpness he is. No doubt lacking in confidence too.

I said similar in the matchg thread.

Besides, the radio was saying that he won a lot in the air, but the flicks weren't reaching Owen today, these kind of partnerships take time, and he can't play perfect flickons to a new partner after a matter of minutes playing together.

A lot of criticism? Why?

Because they're idiots.

Didn't reckon a great deal to him tonight in all honesty, but he doesn't really look like a target man to me. ???

Pretty hilarious all in all really. Literally no mention of him from the manager for months, regarded as if he doesn't exist. Then all of a sudden, it's matchday and there's no one else and it's "crunch time".

Feel for the lad. Put in a reasonable if unspectacular shift from a footballing perspective.

Did well tonight, particularly considering how lacking in match fitness he is. Streets ahead of Owen, just as Carroll was at the weekend.

I was disappointed that we didn't go for a Carroll/Xisco partnership in the last 10 mins. Two big lads for the wingers to aim for might have given Hull something to think about. We should have went 4-3-3 IMO - we could easily have taken Butt off and went for it.

Xisco hasn't had anywhere near enough football to judge him.

I agree that Xisco could be a lot better but its crystal clear that Carroll has top class aerial ability in EPL and that's what we need to fight against relegation.

"Agents are also understood to be working on behalf of Robinho to pursue ways of getting him a move before the transfer window closes.

However, FIFA regulations state a player cannot play for three clubs in one season.

Robinho played for Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup before joining City.

But such is his determination to quit that Robinho would be willing to cite a breakdown in his relationship with City boss Mark Hughes as “just sporting cause” — a ruling which would enable him to leave. "

there's hope for xisco/us yet. a "breakdown in the relationship" would be understating our situation.

What the hell is going on at City?

Robinho finally realizing how badly he f***ed up

Maybe there's truth to the jokes that he thought he was joining Man United.

He did sack his agent not long afterwards

He was quite open at the time, even after he signed for City, that he'd rather be playing for Chelsea.  The problem was he'd burnt his bridges at Real and had to leave, so when Real accepted City's bid and Chelsea couldn't match it, he had little choice.

It seems our Joe not for the first time has forgotten about Xisco

"Michael's on crutches already for protection and he's going to have a scan tomorrow.

"That just leaves us with Andy Carroll. We're missing Obafemi Martins and (Mark) Viduka. There's no chance of Viduka being back for the weekend and Martins is no more than an outside chance."
