It's worked for Villa. It worked for Man Utd a few years ago when they got Sabitzer and Weghorst just to patch them through to the end of the season. It's poor for PSR I suppose but I don't see the problem in having a couple of squad players each each season on loan.

It didn't work for Villa though, they rolled the dice to get champions league and didn't. Although it has to be said at least they had some reason to roll the dice.. I think even the most optimistic poster would admit CL is beyond on us now so why spend the 20m Villa did on temporary fixes? It's money pissed up the wall given the player loaned doesn't belong to us.

Plus to play devil's advocate, we're struggling to integrate who we bought in the summer. Is adding more new faces to the mix going to help?

I think a new keeper and LB cover is essential and would instantly improve us without needing too much training ground time.

When we go for a GK it has to be as close to a sure thing as we can get, and I don’t think Trafford is that. Last time he was in the premier league he lost his place to Muric, then he looked shaky for Man City in the summer. Also fuck offering them a profit. I’d see if Kobel and Carnesecchi are possible.

We are literally #1 in big spenders who buy a lot from the PL.  Where’s the relative pull to more balanced and varied there? Howe obviously has a chronic bias and he should be stopped.

 alright, man. This is fun but I'll be sticking to my guns on the matter of him being okay with signing players from outside the PL; evidence: he's signed players from outside the PL.

James Trafford and Leif Davis signing in January and Ross Wilson leaving in June.

Give Wilson a chance, I would like to see a couple of big signings though

They missed out on a CL spot by a small margin. I doubt they'd have even finished top 6 if they'd not signed those loan players.

Inexperienced, has a mistake in him - need I go on?

These are not the signings that elevate us to the next level. I can absolutely see it happening too.

We've not the budget nor the pulling poor to attract the finished article.

Tbf, they missed out on the premise of a bad showing on the last day of the season and a dodgy VAR call. They almost pulled it off and were an arse hair away from doing so.

I'd like to see some technical players come in soon, rather than strong brutes or pace merchants. I do think he's trying to play a better brand of football that relies on running all over the opposition to a much lesser degree, but we don't have the players for it yet. How much of that is down to Howe's own choices, it's hard to pin down. Where these players come from I'm not arsed in the slightest, although I do think it's hard to sign the better technicians out of the PL as we'll be priced out.

Agreed. We have to take the long term view and buy players who will be the finished article in a year or two. Maybe we could attract the promising talent by offering them a route to first team football they won't get at the cartel clubs.

Players like Gallagher and Trafford would be a disaster for the fees they would command. Neither an upgrade (or are a slight upgrade) on what we already have.

We clearly have a tight list of targets and it’s not a particularly long one. Each window feels like we just check back on the list and see who might still be available.

Technically, we're only 6 points off 5th place which could once again be good enough for Champions League. We just need to start clicking and go on a run. Our next 4 league games are Burnley, Palace, Leeds and Wolves, if we're going to go on a run,now is the time to do it.
