Right now, we're not going to challenge for title as we just lost our star striker to the current champions. So ceiling with Isak is potential challenges (as our form last sesaon did nearly drag us into the conversation for 1 week ), without it's try and qualify for UCL. Players may develop and that ceiling raises again, but right not it is lower. We've push that ceiling up by developing players and pushing beyond current levels of ability of some, and that's what we'll have to do again. I don't think we definitely do, but I didn't think challenging for the title was contingent with having Isak anyway tbh, we'd still be away from that with him here and all of the other signings we made. I just doubt their plan was to sign Ekitike AND the anfield rat in the same window. Maybe it was like, but their forwards don't look very balanced to me. After seeing Ekitike in their first 3 games, he looks as dynamic as Isak but capable of running for 90 minutes. I guess we are going to see just how much was Isak's inability to run for 90 minutes vs Isak phoning it in post cup final soon enough. Let’s hope it’s the former

There was links of Jota leaving during the season as much as Nunez. Think they were ready to completely revamp that attack through the middle, because Jota (injuries) and Nunez (shit) were inconsistent for them for different reasons and it was last chance to get best value for them. Eddie is massively risk-adverse and likes to sign Pl-proven players, but Woldermade is a full German international, and Germany haven't been shit for about 5 decades, if not longer. I'd far rather we signed our German giant than Pedro, Delap, Watkins, Jackson and all the others mentioned. Ekitike is probably the only striker we were linked with that I would have preferred, but then watching him, he seems like a bit of a cunt. Tbf, Woltemade is a bit of an unknown quantity, he did not have much of a profile a year ago, he went to Stuttgart on a free. He exploded on the scene last year, and shone in the U21's tournament. Howe might prefer PL proven players, but like with Ekitike and Isak, when he sees some outstanding attributes in a player, he will back his judgement. You just have to look at Woltemade's insane close control at speed to see what he could become.

I think Ekitike wide left will not only waste him slightly but will also leave Kerkez very, very vulnerable. Wirtz has to fit in there somewhere too. They've a very top heavy side for sure. Not much balance whatsoever.

It feels like the Waugh article was aimed at the ceiling of the player's ability rather than the ceiling of their success on a football pitch, I'd agree with you that we're less likely to succeed with the rat gone, but I'd also argue that it cannot be stated that the squad ability ceiling is lower just yet. He's clearly not a shit player, he looks very talented, but until he's been tested in the PL there is always some doubt. Bundesliga isn't exactly the most demanding when it comes to defences. But I agree, all signs do point to him being the real deal.

gbandit
Just give up watching the sport if you can’t see that Lewis Hall is incredible at passing the ball. Basically our best passer down the line in the team, unbelievably good at short passing as well, excellent crosser

Ketsbaia
Today's attempt to justify these events is that Isak/Wilson combined for just 23 league goals last season. Let Wissa and Woltemade get 12 each and we're better.

ExiledGeordie
I’d like to think we might pick someone up in Jan, maybe loan or obligation to buy or straight out purchase - attacking midfielder maybe. Thinking ahead to next summer you’d imagine they’ll look at a new keeper for the first 11, could also see a new winger coming in maybe. My only worry next summer would be the likes of Tino and Tonali being the targets of clubs able to pay bigger wages/potentially greater trophy potential, City etc. That being said the next two windows if they go well could push us even further towards a genuine top 4 side off the foundation we have now. Optimistic Nut
1 hour ago, Scoot said: Correct. Common sense tells you that. 20 between them if they're sharing the number 9 position. 14 goals between Gordon & Barnes. 14 goals between Elanga & Murphy. 15 goals between the central midfielders. 5 goals between the centre-backs. That'd get 68 league goals which would equal last season but I reckon it's a realistic breakdown of where the goals should come. Asking a lot of the wingers but if they're supposed to be top 5 challenging players then it's realistic I think.
